simply and effectively , events are given in chronological order , a useful alphabetical
index is attached , and there are tables at the beginning which form a valuable guide to local reference through nationality . The
introductions to the several sections are admirably written , and set forth the different periods under review with surprising fulness and
lucidity . No other work that we know of gives so much information in the same space . From Messrs . Macmillan & Co . —Messrs .

From the same . —* The Poetical Works of Alfred , Lord Tennyson . ' Any one desiring to make a friend a present of a book that should
correspond in its contents and its get-up could hardly make a more suitable purchase than this exquisite pocket edition of Tennyson's poems .
Of a size to slip easily into the pocket , printed on good paper in type which , though necessarily small , is beautifully clearand elegantly bound
in crimson morocco , it is , one of the prettiest specimens of book-making we have seen for a considerable time . It is a pleasure simply to

In both of these aims the author seems to us to have succeeded admirably . The book is
written in strong nervous English , and the character of Gordon is well brought out . A better present for a youth beginning life could
not be selected from current literature . From Mr . David Watt , —' The Strife of Love in
a Dream : being the Elizabethan Version of the First Book of the Hypnerotomachia of Francesco Colonna . ' A new edition by Andrew
Lang . This is a work for the antiquarian and such as are curious regarding what is odd in literature . It must be confessed that it is not very
fascinating reading , and , even if the subjectmatter were much more interesting than it is , the archaic spelling would a serious iJ VJL J \ S iJ bar KfiAt to

book is the result of independent inquiry into many matters of interest concerning the administration of London which have not been
dealt with popularly before . The author has seen for himself the things which he describes , and has obtained his information at first hand .
He makes some startling revelations regarding life in the metropolis , and not a few sensible remarks on some of the modes of doing business .
The book is nicely illustrated . From Messrs . George Routledge & Sons ,
