      still larger Increase in the number of new editions . The quantity of books published on social and political economy , trade , finance , & 6 ., is almost exactly the same as that of last year .

      * Illustrated works , arts , & c ., ' which includes all kinds of ' practical' bdfoks , is a department in which the increase of production is no less than fifty per cent . In new books of voyages

      and travels , the number is almost identical with tfiat of last year . This section includes guides for travellers . As an example of the vagaries of statistics , we inay point to the class ' poetry

      and the drama' as showing a production in 1888 twice as great as that of 1887 . Of books which we have found it impossible to relegate to any particular class , we observe that the past

      year has brou ght us just fifty per cent , more than its predecessor . Belles-lettres , essays , & c ,, and the section ' year books and serials in volumes' are nearly the same in number as they

      were last year * The same may be said of ' medicine and surgery . '
