Booksellers' Puovident iNSTiTurioy . — The usual monthly meeting of this institution was held on Thursday , the 16 th inst ., at 56 Old Bailey , E . C ., wher * there were present thirteen directors , Charles James Longman , Esq ., in the chair . The sum of £ 130 . 8 s . 4 cL was granted in relief to seventy members and widows of members , and , in accordance with the usual custom at this season of the year , an additional grant was made to the temporary recipients , which was increased by further Christmas gifts generously given by Messrs . Sampson Low & Co . and John Van Voorst , Esq . International Shorthand Congress . — We have much pleasure in inserting the following communication : — 'The shorthand men , who have so much to do with other people's public gatherings , are about to hold a Congress of their own , and it promises to be a large and important one . Next year is to be their anmis mirabilis , commemorating as it will two interesting events in the history of their art , viz .: — the introduction of Mr . Pitman ' s popular and system the of p g honograp ination of hy modern just fifty shorthand years ago by , Dr . Timothy Bright three hundred years ago . This double celebration , Jubilee and Tercentenary , will call together large numbers of the shorthand fraternity throughout the world . Poe . — -The New-York Times lately printed the following hopeless letter from the pen of this illustrious but unfortunate poet .. , The letter is dated * Philadelphia , July 19 , 1838 , ' and was brought to light at Topsham , Me . It was found in a . collection of autographs contained in an old iron safe : ' Could I obtain the most unimportant clerkship in your gift—by land or sea . —to relieve me from the miserable life of literary drudgery to which I now , with a breaking heart , submit , and for -which neither my temper nor my abilities have fitted me , I would never again repine at any dispensation of God . I feel that I could then ( having something beyond mere literature as a profession ) quickly elevate myself to the station which is my due . It is neediess to say how fervent , how unbounded would be my gratitude to the one who would rescue me from ruin and put me in possession of happiness . I leave my fate in your hands . Appleton are about to produce a * Cyclopaedia of American Biography . ' The Critic says : * One of the important undertakings to which D . Applefcon & Co . have lent their name is a ' Cyclopaedia of American Biography , ' of which General James Grant Wilson and John Fiske are the editors . The first volume , A to C , will be issued early this month , and sold by subscription only . Other volumes will appear at intervals of six months ; possibly oftener .
