TN accordance with our custom , on the last day of December we present to our readers an J- Analytical Table of the < - BOOKS PUBLISHED DURING THE YEAR . On the last occasion we had pleasure in remarking that tfye almost universal depression of trade did not seem to have affected the production of books . ) ' This year , as the reader will observe , the total number shows a decrease of some four hundred books . As the preparation of a volume in many cases is spread over a considerable space of time , it may well be that the stagnation of business has made itself Felt , but we are pleased to notice signs of a revival , not so much in the production of books as in the selling of books . At the same time the increasing number of magazines and newspapers which is presented for a reader ' s attention must unquestionably exert an influence , and the newspapers often give such summaries of new works , and extracts from them , tha £ a lazy man seems almost absolved from going to the books themselves .
