the classes and the masses of Lancashire . Canon Diggle writes from * the standpoint of
intimate personal friendship . He has had the assistance of nearly all Dr . Fraser ' s intimate friends , and from first to last , the invaluable
co-operation of Mrs . Fraser . He describes , in a graphic and vigorous manner , the work of Dr . Fraser in — the — — — pulpit ™—* —¦— ^^ — — - ¦— , -y on — ¦^^^^~ ¦ the — ~— - ^ - p v latform — - ^ - ~—~ — — — — , » and — — ' —~—
—amongst the people ; and he shows how largehearted , manly , wise , and _ sympathetic , ' the Bishop of all denominations' truly was , and
how nobly and cheerfully he laboured to brighten and better the lot of the crowded population in the towns and villages of his
important diocese . „ There are many delightful glimpses in the volume of Dr . Fraser ' s unaffected simp ¦ ¦ licitygenial " ^ % disregard for ¦¦ more

ascendency in Lancashire was never more powerfully displayed than when he died in harness in the fulness of his work and powers .
This book , though perhaps a little diffusely written , gives an impressive and attractive picture of a blameless and beneficent career .
From the same . —* Thomas Nast ' s Christmas Drawings fot the Human Race . ' This handsome quarto volume contains a large number
of full-page drawings , all of them more our less concerned with Santa Claus , true patron saint of childhood _ . The bluff _ generous _ _ — old _ _ grey ^ 2 — -
beard is represented going , ^^ his rounds laden _ ^ f with parcels on Christmas Eve , and the preparations which the little folks have made for the
welcome but mysterious guest are amusingly 1 portrayed . It is said with truth in the brief ; preface to these capital pictures that there is
1 no child who cannot understand them , and no parent who cannot en joy them . In illustrating this old and familiar theme , Mr . Kast has
displayed a great deal of originalitj ' , and much kindly and genuine humour . He evidently believes in the good old-fashioned way of
keeping Christmas , and has done his best to make Santa Claus very real to those little people who on Christmas Eveif everdwell in
the enchanted region of Wonderland , , . The best picture in the book , in our judgment , is i that which represents the snow-clad roof of a
rambling old country-house , on the towering chimney-stack of which boyish hands have scrawled' Santa Clausstop hereplease !

This picture is aptly termed ' Christmas Station / There are others in the book equally amusing ; and we are certain that old and
young alike will appreciate the quaint fancy , sly humour , and overflowing kindliness . From . Messrs . Macmillan & Co . —* Scenes and
Characters ; orf Eighteen Months at Beechcroft , ' by Charlotte M . Yonge ( fifth edition ) . This was the talented writer ' s second
publication , and , although suffering" from the lack of experience , it is one of the most cheery and bright stories which this cultivated caterer for
young people has produced . The book is a happy blending of pathps , humour , and practical common sense .
