From the same . — ' A Story of Stops , ' by Mrs . Davidson . With fourteen full-page

* Histoire d'Amour . ' This is a very pretty story , in prose , told by a poet . M . Deroulede has written martial songs which have reached their
( j 130 th edition , besides other military music , and a draiua in five acts , which is now in its 23 rd edition . The * Histoire d'Amour' is in
part a tale of protecting affection on the part of an elder brother . Jacques , the younger , gets into an amorous entanglement during a
few months' stay in Italy . At the end of this period the lady mysteriously disappears , and the brothers go over Europe in search of her .
Their adventures and amusements—for the elder brother will amuse the younger in spite of himself—furnish the lighter part of the
CJ O . story , which is , in effect , a tragic one . M . Deroulede ' s « Histoire dAmour' has already reached its 11 th edition .
From Messrs . Crosby Lockwood & Co . —' Wood Engraving , ' by William Norman Brown . This
practical and easy introduction to the study of the art of wood engraving has , we are pleased to see , reached a second edition . No simp -V . ler
or better manual could be found for'those who are beginning the study of wood engraving . From & Rivington Messrs . Sampson Limited . Low — The , Marston Standar d Searle Opera
, Glass , ' by Charles Annesley . We have here the detailed plots of ninety-five celebrated operaswith critical remarks and dates . The
fact that , the book has reached a fourth edition shows that the public appreciate Mr . Annesley ' s labours in giving outlines and critical estimates
of the favourite operas of the world . From Messrs . Macmillan & Co . — ' Sir Charles
Napier , ' by Colonel Sir William F . Butler ( ' English Men of Action' Series ) . No truer hero ever moved among men than Sir Charles
Napier . Throughout a varied and trying career , in the course of which he was assailed by man Bi y and bbb peculiar temptationshe kept his

them ; and one way of hindering them from taking up arms , viz ., feeding them / This sufficiently shows that he was not a man to go
placidly with the tide whithersoever it might carry him , and going with the tide in such
cases generally means a safe landing in some harbour of honour . Napier , however , preferred
the approval of his own conscience to the approval of men , even when they were official and B- » ^^»»^ . ° "B ^ B » influential B > »^ B ^ ^ " ^ B ^^^ " ^ B ^ BMP BV BB » B ^ B ^^ . followed an independent course , and often failed in winning the favour of his superiors and employersthough he won battles and
, benefited a people . His history from tirst to last is one of surpassing interest , and it is fortunate for his fame that Sir William Butler
has become his biographer . From the same . — ' An Elementary Geography of
India , Burma , and Ceylon , ' by Henry F . Blanford . A capital specimen of what an elementary «/ cj geograp — o r hy should be . The author ,
who until lately was meteorological reporter to the Government of India , has personally visited most parts of the Indian Empireand much of
X JL , | the information contained in this book is set down from his own observation . The descriptions have therefore a freshness uncommon in
geographical works , particularly of the elementary sort . Mr . Blanford has , however , taken care to consult all the best authorities
on matters connected with India . From the same . — ' Miss Tommy , a Mediaeval
Romance , ' by the author of ' John Halifax , Gentleman , ' with illustrations by Frederick Noel Paton ; * John Vale ' s Guardian , ' by D . Christie Murray ; and ' The Heritage of Dedlow

in goin ^ g through him again that Bret Harte has still the old freshness and charm . The four short stories of his contained in the
volume before us are all masterpieces . From Mr . Elkin Mathews . —* Dante : Six
Sermons , ' by Philip H . Wicksteed . Second edition . These six sermons , or rather lectures , form a very good introduction to the study of
Dante , and we have pleasure in commending them . Mr . Wicksteed is a sane and intelligent critic , and has evidently devoted much time to
the study of his subject . From Messrs . Moffatt & Paige . —* King John ,
with Introduction and Notes , Arranged and Classified' by Thomas Page ( Moffatt ' s Plays of Shakespeare , edited by John 4 Paige ) . Students
will find this edition of King John' useful . Mr . Paige ' s introduction is a valuable piece of work , and there arc literary •/ notes by mrHazlitt
