Richard Anthony Proctor . —This celebrated astronomer died of yellow fever at Kew
York a day or two ago . The Times obituary notice says : —Richard Anthony Proctor was born in
Chelsea , March 23 , 1834 . His father , William Prbctor who was , called was a to gentlem the Bar an but of never ample practised -- means ---- . ,
Proctor was a weak boy , physically , and was — educated at private schools . His father died
in 1850 , and a protracted lawsuit so impoverished the family that in 1854 he entered
the London Joint Stock Bank as a clerk . The family position , however , soon , improved , and
Richard entered King ' s College , London , in 1855 and almost a year later _ King ' s College __

serious study of mathematics and astronomy , as a distraction from grief at the death of his
firstborn . His first production seems to have been a paper on double stars in the Cornhill
Magazine for 1863 , and next year he began a series of investigations which ultimately were
embodied in his first important work , ' Saturn and His System' ( 1805 ) . Up to 1866 Mr .
Proctor worked simply because he liked it ; but the failure of OverendGurneyand Co .
in that year deprived him of , his all and , compelled him to use his talent and knowledge
to earn a living for himself and his growing family . Though his articles were readily
accepted by magazines , he for some time found it difficult to persuade publishers to undertake
with his works , unusual . But rapidity his popularit his name y soon soon grew became , and a
familiar and favourite one with English readers all the world over . The works to which we
