account of the new librarian ' s career , from which it may be judged whether Mr .
Carnegie ' s princely gift of £ 50 , 000 is likely to come to nought , or whether it is appreciated : —
School " Mr . Hew Brechin Morrison wjio , headmaster has been of appointed Smith ' s
Librarian , to the , Edinburgh Public Library , is 37 years of age and a native of Sutherland
where he received the earlier part of his , education . He afterwards attended the Free
1871 Church passed Normal the Government School , Edinburgh examinatidn / and for in
good his certificat service e , by which the has Education since been Department raised for .
He also attended a course of lectures on educationfor which he holds a certificate from
the University , of St . Andrews . His first appointment was to the school at Ardrishaig .
In 1875 he was appointed to the school of the Parish Board of Brechinand in 1878 to the
head mastership of the Smith , ' s Schools there , which have greatly prospered under his
management . For three years he was Secretary , and for one year President of the Brechin
Educational Institute . In 1881 he was elected to the Committee of Management of the
Edunumber cational of Institute votes recorded of Scotland for by candidate the largest any up
to that time . At present he is a director of the Mechanics' InstitutionBrechinand a
