followed the folios and illustrated them with autographs and portraits . He had also a taste
for the early English drama , and for the French , . Spanishand Italian dramatic writers and early

DeBry , Purchas , and Hakluy , t . Besides these -. 5 acquisitions -I , he made a scholarI ' s general C
library . His widow , in order that the library might be kep i t together and migj ht perpetuate
the name of her husband a , in 1873 < . sold x . a the . entire collection to the Boston Public Library at
a nominal price , on the conditions that it should be kept in a room by itself ; that no book
should be taken from the library ; that a catalogue CJ should be prepared X * . ; and that it shoultd
be known as the * Barton Collection . ' In 1880 a catalogue O of the Shakspeare M . portion A . of the
library Part II . was called published i Miscellaneous as Part I ' . ; is and issued now
which includ , es all of the collection , not Shak , - spearean in its character . It is a royal octavo

The late Mr . J . O . Halliwell-Phillipps ' s Library was sold at Sotheby ' s on the first four
days of this month . The collection consisted of a rough-looking lotwith just a nice book here
and there . Perhaps , , the most extraordinary thing t ^ 3 in . connection with this sale "was the
prices realised for the entire remainders of Mr . Halliwell-Hhiliipps L . L ' s Privatel 4 y VPrinted
Publications ; of these only small . numbers were printed for presents , in some cases only
twenty copies , but surely an average of a shilling a volume all round was very low .

An interesting sale took place at Sotheby's on the 9 th inst . when a unique collection of
' Phiz' drawings , came under the hammer . The 'first forty lots were this famous artist ' s
illustrations to * "Martin Chuzzlewit . * All the drawings were framed and were accompanied
by the etchings . Lot 1 was the well-known frontispiece 'Tom Pinch at the Organ' a
