All Who Are Interested In The Work Of Th...
ALL who are interested in the work of the Booksellers' Provident Institution will
hope that the festival held on the 9 th instant , will have healthy effect in bringing to its lists
a large accession of new members . It is rather difficult to conjecture why an institution of
this description should be so far behind the times in regard to support from , the class
whom it is intended to benefit . A letter which we publish to-day may give one
indication respecting the reason for the lukewarmness * v ^ b ^^^ r uf ^ ri F of ^ w ^ * fe the ^^* " ^ ^^ ^ » trade ^^ ^^ fe B ^^ F *^^ B 1 ~ — generall ^ bjb 5 ^^ ^^ ^& ^^ ^^ r ^^ ^ mr ^ r ^^^ b * y . BF The ^^ b ^ h ^ Bh riBBp ^^» writer v p ^ Bh ^ Bb ^^ r ^^^ ^ Bl ^ says l ^^ F ^ V */ ri ¦ ,
that the institution was not made known to j young men in his early dayswhen
member-, ship would have been comparatively inexpensive , j
i We do not think that such is the case now , but if so no better step could be taken than
to print in separate form the admirable address ; delivered by Mr . C . J . Longman on Saturday
last and to distribute it extensively throughout the trade , in small houses as well as large . We
anticipate much good would result from this ' proceeding after the successful and pleasant
gathering at Abbots Langley . In again referring to this outing , it would
be well to take the opportunity of congratulating the office-bearers upon its success . That
everything passed off so smoothly and so pleasantly was unquestionably due to the good
•* * jl cj management of those in charge , and we might almost hope JL . that entertainments of a similar
description should be continued , so as to bring together members of the trade who ought to
have freer and more frequent intercourse
outside the routine of business .
