THE « BOOKSELLERS' PROVIDENT INSTITUTION . '
To the Editor of the Publishers' Circular . Dear Sir , —I desire through the medium of
your columns to record an expression of ray appreciation of the very liberal provision made for all those who were fortunate enough to be
present at the Jubilee Gathering of the members and others in connection with the Booksellers ' Provident Institution , in the grounds of their excellent * Retreat' at Abbots Langley , on the 9 th
inst . I do so the more especially because of my non-membership of that Society , the claims of which upon the support of ' the trade ' should be , after such a demonstration as that referred to
more generally acknowledged . It is , in my , humble opinion , greatly to the credit of all who in contributed to the enjoyment of that
memorable any way occasion , and it is to be hoped that the result of so much liberal expenditure and general kindness on the part of those concerned
in the event may be of the most satisfactory nature ; in other words , that the advantages of the sideration Institution for , the and welfare the evidence of those of eli such ible con to
g become members , and especially those who are alread make a y start such , at should once in induce attaching a great themselves number to to
it . Sir , the surprise to not a few may be , Why has the Society such a small constituency ? How is it that out of the vast multitude of persons engaged in the tradesuch a small minority have
availed themselves of , the opportunity of becoming members of it ? For , considering the years of its existence CAlotl / iOv iCA and > ki \* - its itn smallness niuaiiii ^ oo of v / j . membershi ixxv ^ iij . »^\^ i . oi 1 ^ p Mj , there ua * - ^* - ^
