haustive . A very complete bibliography of Willis ' s writings and compilations covers four
pages of the volume .-From Mr . . A .. Jotiiiston . —* The History of a Lump of Goldfrom the Mine to the Mint / by
, Alexander Watt . Mr . Watt ' s former works , which dealt respectively with lumps of * coal / ' chalk / and 'iron / were very well received by
the public , and we have no doubt his new book will be welcomed with equal favour , as a popular treatment of an interesting but ( in its legitimate
form ) difficult study . From Messrs . Kelly & Co . —A book which has become a possession of members of the
different trades necessary is 4 Kelly ' s Directory of the Stationers , Printers , Publishers , Booksellers , and Papermakers of Eng l land , Scotland , and Wales /
— -- - — r— — — - - r f- * r r of which the fourth edition has just been published . The first issue appeared in 1872 . The editors say that in the edition of 1876 the names
of 50 , 000 persons appeared ; in the present issue tlie figures have risen to 60 , 000 . These statistics seem to speak well for the popularity and
proft . J . * . V JL . sperity of the associated industries of the book and paper trades . The experience of the editors in the preparation of such works guarantees a clear
and readily available arrangement of the directory , which in other respects seems to be carefully compiled , although here and there we
observe signs of very indifferent revision . The book ought to be welcomed heartily by the trade . From Messrs . Sampson LowMarston & Co .
, , — ' General Gordon ' s Private Diary of his Exploits in China / amplified by Samuel Mossman . This work gives a succinct account of the
difficulties which were met and surmounted by General Gordon during the Tai-ping Rebellion , when the hero ' s achievements gained for him the
never-dying nama of * Chinese Gordon / Mr . Mossman was the editor of the North China Herald at that period . This book is actually a
history of the Rebellion , having a special value from the circumstance of the author ' s having been upon the spotand having had personal
inter-, course with General Gordon . From the same . —It was a happy thought of the publishers to issue a ' Selection from Crowded
Out , or Not Hung for Want of Space , at ¦ the Royal Academy , 1885 / To picture-buyers the work will be of considerable serviceas it shows
, the merits of the works for which room could not bo found at Burlington House , and to the artists rei ^ resented by the excellent sketches of their
works to be found in the little volume the publication will be of equal benefit , as their addresses are given as well hs the prices they set upon their
pictures . The editor , Mr . Henry Lassalle , has done his share of the work satisfactorily , and wo commend ' Crowded Out * as a useful illustrated
supplement to the Royal Academy Catalogue . From the same . — Life and Speeches of the Marquis of Salisbury % j , K . G . / by F . S . PullingM . A .
