hold , ' The Shilling Cookery Book ; ' it is crowded with practical hints and valuable recipes . Messrs . Cassell likewise send us two
new volumes of their deservedly popular * Red Library . ' The first is Harrison Ainsworth ' s fascinating historical romance , * The Tower of

two hundred pages , entitled * Free Trade in Sugar , ' Mr . George Martineau makes a vigorous and sp irited repl JL y Vto Sir Thomas Farrer ' s
statements on the subject . It appears , from the Board of Trade returns , that in 1802 , when bounties were first introducedthe beet-root
sugar annually amounted to 400 , , 000 tons . In 1872 , the production ran up to 1 , 140 , 000 tons , or upwards of one-third of the Board of Trade
totals . According to Mr . Martineau it is now 2 , 800 , 000 tons , or considerably more than half the true visible - ¦ - — production - _ . _ _ — of the _ world . _ Yet
_ n , . * in spite of such faots , Sir Thomas Farrer denies that beetroot has , to that extent , taken the m— ^ —L == r =
place of cane-sugar in the world ' s consumptiion . A thoroughly able , lively , and trenchant examination of this burning question .
