The * National Union Of Elementary. Teac...
connected with the advancement , organisation - ^ — — — —— and - ——— — economy — — _ - — - — — — » of — — national — — - education , the
princi , ples _ ^ of which ^ they are daily in the habit of putting to the test . The results of
individual study and experience are concentrated at these - — meetings - *^ m ; consequentl . ¦¦ y the pro •¦*
-ceedings , every year , have a veritable and well-defined importance . The conference held
during Easter week at Norwich supplied amp — le evidence of the success which has
hitherto *— attended the Union , besides showing signs of its increasing usefulness . The
president was Mr . R . Wild , B . A ., who opened the Conference with a telling address in which
a comparison of our own with continental systems of education , the result of personal
investigations , was largely considered . On the second day rof the Conference a wise resolution
was passed asking for a Royal Commission to inquire into the question of over-pressure in
schools . Unanimous approval was given to a resolution demanding the immediate
appointmerit of a Minister « bp * of Education . to •¦» •»* take charge of elementary and secondary education .
The National Union of Elementary Teachersit appears , at the close of 1884
showed , aggregate of 12 , 840 members . These were distributed among 314 associations .
While five associations ceased to exist during the previous year , there was an increase of
550 in the membership . These figures give a fair idea of the extent to which this Union
has been entered upon by the members of a large and influential body , who have the public
weal at heart hardly less than their own professional advancement .
