in 1817 , and yet he retained , until the beginning of the present year , his keen interest in the
movements and aspirations of contemporary politics .
Sir Edward Baines for many years took an honourable and prominent part in the debates
in the House of Commons , and was especially active in ail questions which concerned
Parliamentary Reform , Free Trade , Education , and Temperance . He was not merely one of the
proprietors , but for several years the editor of the Leeds Mercury , a newspaper which has
always occupied a foremost position in the country , and which , to the present hour ,
worthily upholds the best traditions of English journalism . In Yorkshire Sir Edward Baines
was universally beloved , and his death , even at so advanced an age , is a distinct and
deeplyfelt loss to the entire community . Personally , he was a most estimable and kindly man , and
he has left behind him the memory of a singularly earnest , useful , blameless , and
altogether beneficent life . ¦
