To the Editor of the Publishers' Circulab . MR . RUSKIN .
Sir , —I have been reading the report of St . George ' s Guild , just issued by Mr . Jtuskin , and it is trulmost pathetic" Will HI permit 111 1 / JJiO to
10 LiXUJ-y y UlKJQLi ^ 'aiUCl / lU . . you J'UU JpOX 1 me \ , KJ quote a sentence , which runs as follows ?—• And yet year after year passes , and not a single reader
or friend has thought it the least incumbent on them to help me to do more ; and from the whole continent of America , which pirates all my book ? ,
and disgraces me "b y base copies of the plates of them , I have never had a sixper . ee sent to help me in anything I wanted to do /
Now , sir , leaving America to answer for itself , I would ask , does not the English bookseller owe sorne-I thing to Mr . Ruskin ? Ho has never wearied in
teaching the English-speaking people the great "value of good books . He has argued that they should not grudge the cost of good booksand he has
impressed upon the rich people that , as they do not grudge great prices for rare carriages or horses , they should not grudge great prices for rare books .
This is a proof that he has rendered great services to the booksellers here , and that he has some claim upon their gratitude ; and could the expression of
that gratitude take a more appropriate form tlian by their responding one and all to the call he now makes for a trifling contribution to the funds of
St . George ' s Guild , which may be sent to the Staffordshire Joint Stock Banking Company , Birmingham ?
We may not be able to agree with all Mr . Ruskin says , but that lie is rendering good
eervices to his country goes without saying , in his making some of the desert parts of out land to blossom as the rose . His health has evidently warned liim lateW that lift munt work whilfi it . is i
