Obituary. J
quent that the refe most rence , exacting and for a person certainty can ^ of fin to ding know all of the families whose fortunes and histories are
national property , no book can excel Dwbrett . Among the by-ways into which the indefatigable editor now undertakes to conduct his readers is
the issue of the females as well as of all collaterals of peers and baronets in the male line , while he also includes all the service distinctions of the
titled folks , whether in the army , navy , or noncombatant branches of Her Majesty ' s service . The clubs to which the individuals belong , their
foreign residences , the abodes of younger members of the families who have gone to seek their fortunes abroad , and other useful details seldom
obtainable , are carefully recorded , and as an evidence of the thoroughness with which Dr . Alair has done Lis work , wo may note that he gives the
new territorial designations of all the regiments to which officers belong . IJecent creations of new patents of nobility , including —p Lord Tennvson s
j * i — — barony , are , it is needless to say . all dul y set forth , and corrections occurring while the sheets were in the press are also noted . The publishers
are to be congratulated on the production of this goodly , good-looking , and useful tome . From the same . — 'Debrett ' s Illustrated House of
Commons and the Judicial Bench / 1884 . Compiled and edited by Robert Henry Muir , LL . D . The speciality L . mf of this work , as our readers are
doubtless nware , is that it is the only book of its class which furnishes the armorial bearings of members of parliament and judger ? and the arms
of the parliamentary a . boroug hs . Apart , from , the illustrations , which are very neatly engraved , the letterpress deserves warm commendation . The
biographical details of the members of Parliament , for the rnobt part personally revised « s to the facts and dates by those whom they concern , are
full and complete , and in every case the antecedents of their political careers and their political opinions are duly noted . A 'Dictionary of
Teennical Parliamentary Expressions / for which , the editor , Dr . JVIair , expresses his acknowledgments to Mr . Reginald Palgrave , Clerk Assistant to the
House of Commons , forms a very useful addition to the volume , and will supply some much needed I information to newspaper readers , candidates for
parliamentary honours , and all who are interested I in such occult matters as * Ways and Means / ' Orders of the Day , * the Previous Question /
' Commttrtls of IJille / and sundry other expressions , as well as in the titles of the various officers I of the House . Another useful table of the changes
in the representation which have occurred since I j the of personal general changes election in in March the position 1880 , s and and a titles record of
members are prefixed to the book . A concise Peerage follows the record of the Commons ' House , and then we have an exhaustive judicial
directory , including not only the judges of all I ranks in this country , but the colonial judges . Debrett ' s * House of Commons ' is well worthy to
rank with his ' Peerage ; ' we can gire it no higher pra-ise . Frum Messrs . Funk < fc WagnallsNew York . —

'The Outstretched Hands . ' Grood Friday Addresses by the Rev . Arthur Williamson , M . A ., Vicar of , St . James ' s , Norlands . A series of brief
addresses given on Good Friday 1882 at the 'Service of the Three Hours' Devotion , ' which has of late years been so largely adopted in Anglican
churches % ' . The outstretch v— ' ed ¥ bands Jk . of the crucfie'l Savicur are regarded under diiferent aspects : as outstretched to be nailed to the cross for
sinners ; outstretched to pardon and "welcome the penitent ; outstretched to console and speak peace to the troubled soul ; outstretched to win the
victory over Satan in the agony of spiritual death ; outstretched in the final bodily anguish ; outp stretched ^ g ^^ 4 ^ ^^ . »* ^*^ 4 * ^ - ^ V » to % * ^ t ^ r ™ finish w ^ * ^ rm ¦• * ^ aVb His ^ VBr ^ * % ^ work T w ^^ ^^ * m- ^ m ; J and w ¦ ^ ^** mt mi outstretched ^ m ^ — — ^ ** i ^~ m » ^* - ^ ^ r ^ - ^ — to — — -
resign the spirit and to receive the Father ' s welcome home . It is a little book which will not only be valued by those who heard the addresses
—they are printed from notes taken by a member of the congregation—but will also be suggestive to the clergy .
