Magazines For§I>Ecembeb— . Harper's Maga...
Magazines for § I > ecembeb— . Harper ' s Magazine is a genuine Christmas
Number , and a marvellous combination of the most exquisitely-finished engraving with really
highclass letterpress . Its frontispiece , * Under the Mistletoe , ' "by Frederick Dielman , pictures a
young couple literally ' under the bough * in the open—not under a shrivelled sprig tied to a hall
gas-lamp—and is a natural and charming sketch . The ' leading article' on Christmas cleverly
"weaves together tradition , sentiment , and realism , for Luther's Christmas board , the Little Waits
at Bracebridge Hall , a reproduction of Kenny Meadows' picture "' of Christmas in the Illustrated
London News of many years ago , and a New England scene of * The Puritan Governor
interrupting Christmas Sports are among the pictures . Mrs . Thackeray Ritchie ' s paper on ' Tennyson '
Trill , however , be held by the majority of readers to ' make the number . ' Its picturesque
description of the poet ' s birthplace , its personal and family details , and its notes on his works ,
form , with the rich collection of plates , in which , a full-page portrait of * the New Peer' takes the
first place , a budget of * Tennysoniana ' which has never before been within reach of the public . .
Space forbids us to name in detail the contents of the number , but we must mention Mr . William Black ' s « Gossip about the West Highlanders '
, Mr . Austin Dobson ' s poem , ' The Milkmaid , ' Mr . Whittier ' s poem , * The Supper of St . Gregory , ' and Mr . Abbey ' s illustrations of Pope ' s poem ,
* The Quiet Life , ' as among the gems of a number which , even in this age of cheap literatur ~^ ^ r _ t ^^ e ~ l ^ and ^» i » ^—^ ——^ ¦ cheap —^ ^»^« —^ _ n ^ art — — ^_» * r , —r has ^^—_ p _ ¦ ^ , m we — * —¦ " ¦ b — el - — ¦ ^—¦ i » eve " —— —— , — ' never — " —^ T ——* ——¦ been " ** " — ^ ~_ # ^ ^*
