Actors , As A Rule, Take Little Interest...
ACTORS , as a rule , take little interest in theencouragement of literature . By them
books are tabooed unless tljey refer to the stage , its individuals , or its accessories . It is natural
however , that the profession should aid , by all , possible means , the preservation of literary
memorials of Shakspeare , and so we heartily sympathise with the object which brought so
influential a gathering together in the Lyceum Theatre , on the 22 nd of April . The purpose of
the meeting was to consider the steps that should be taken towards augmenting and
preserving the Shakspeare Memorial Library" at Stratf ord-on-Avon . * Our readers are , perhaps
aware that in the institution built in S tratf * . ord ax - , on-Avon , through the munificence of a
wellknown admirer of our greatest poet , there is a Shakspearian library , or rather what should be
termed the nucleus of a Shakspearian Library . The intention now is to increase this library «/
gradually and systematically , so that in course of time the birthplace of the poet may possess
a collection of what is called Shakspeariana that will stand unrivalled .
It requires some thought to make out , practically , why such a library should be
established . The British Museum collection is a magnificent one ; and students of Shakspeare
could not do better than consult the books in the Readers' Room of that institution . The
reason , however , that influences Mr . Henry Irving and other distinguished «_» students of i
I Shakspeare to encourage the new scheme is that the poet ' s works can be best studied
among the scenes of his early life , where his mind was conceiving the masterly creations
which have electrified generation after genera-! i tion of civilised races . He would ¦ h indeed i ffc be

success in this undertaking , and if any of our readers can suggest a step for its
advancement we have no doubt the suggestion will be gladly received by those who have taken
charge of the matter .
The Subject Of Early Closing Is At Prese...
The subject of early closing is at present agitating the houses in the Row . Most of
the great publishing offices now close at 6 p . m ., and an effort is being made to gain the same
privilege for general wholesale houses . The advantages of early closing are too well known
to be recapitulated . Everyone , in summer time especially , likes to enjoy the quiet of the
evening ; and tlie repose or healthy outdoor exerc CAC 1 UOC ise i IS s as £ ( 10 a CMlKA dvantageous . V CUJlUCbgC / U U . 0 to UlS th H 1 C e * emp 3 XLL ^ J loyer \ . \ J J VZi \ . ' s O
business as it is to the employe e physical and mental strength .
Acting on this opinion , the directors of Messrs . Cassell & Co . have determined to close
their publishing departments ^ five o ' clock instead of six during the months of May ,
June , July , and August . On Saturdays , one o ' clock will be ~ ~ th e hour for closing . Messrs .
Oassell & Co . are acting very generously in this respect , and probably some other houses
may follow their example . At the same time it would be almost impossible for wholesale
firms having a large general Continental trade to change the hour from six to five . In such
establishments the latter hour is about the busiest time of tlie day . We hope , however ,
where that Messrs practicable . Cassell 1 will ' s examp be thoroug le , in all hly cases
considered , especially , a ^ s during the bustling winter time the business days are long and
uncertain . The sp JLirit in which this determination on
the part of Messrs . Cassell & Co . has been Received by the employe ' s may be gathered
