From the same . — True Tales for My Grandsons / by Sir Samuel White Baker . With
illustrations by W . J . Hennessy . We are glad to see a new edition of Sir Samuel Baker ' s charming , True Tales * with the spirited illustrations by
Mr . Hennessy , . Some of the stories are very wonderful indeed , and well suited to beguile the tedium of the winter
long evenings . From the same . —* The Miner ' s Right , ' by Rolf
Boldrewood Boldrewood . , and and '* Good Good News News of of God God , ' bv by Charles Kingsley . Two of Messrs . Macmillan ' s popular reprints . The type is clear and the
paper and binding good . From the same . — ' Kirsteen : the Story of a Scottish Famil — y seventyw * years ago fc ? , ' by •/ Mrs . OlipXhant .
3 vols . Considering the great literary activity of Mrs . Oliphant , and the time she has been before the public as a writer of fiction , it is
really astonishing how she manages to keep up the high standard which she set herself at the beginning . * Kirsteen' is as fresh and charming
a work as ever came from her pen . The pictures of Scottish life in the past are not only extremely interesting , but are drawn with the
power and fidelity of a great artist in love with her subject . The character drawing , too , is without exception admirable . Drumcarro
might at first impress a Southern reader as being slighily unreal at times , but he will be i found on fuller acquaintance to be true to the
principles of his own being . In fact , he is but a type ° f ^ pa ? t , and such a type as was
common enough north of the Tweed seventy ! years ago . Kirsteen herself is beyond all
praise . Not for a long time have we read anything so good as the scene in which Kirsteen j and visits demands her dead Ronald lover ' s 's mother handkerchief in the . Hig But hlands the ,
whole book is excellent , and it is idle and i unfair to single out special parts . | From Messrs . J . Masters & Co . — ' The Builders
of the Church in Northumbria , ' by M . H . Hall . This volume consists of the biographies of I | tal twelve in founding of the men and who building were chiefl the y instrumen Church in
-I Northern England . The sketches are interj esting in themselves and besides have historical ! value . A view of the interior of Wakefield
Cathedral forms an attractive frontispiece . From Messrs . Methuen & Co . —* Cardinal
Newman , ' by Richard H . Hutton (« English Leaders . of Religion' Series ) . In the first chapter Mr . Hutton expresses his opinion that Cardinal
Newman was one of the greatest of our modern men , and speaking of the Cardinal ' s poems , he says , for grandeur of outline , purity of taste ,
and radiance of total effect I know hardly any short poems in the language that equal them . ' That is saying a good dealparticularly when
we remember that Wordsworth , with his fine critical drew the faculty line at admired his poetry Newman . Mr ' s . prose Fro , ud but e
brackets Carlyle and Newman as the two men their who most generation powerfull . Mr y . influenced Hutton takes the thoug no account ht of

Mr . Hutton ' s monograph . Messrs . Methuen may be congratulated on the start they have made with the series .
