u but he will never do anything else . " ' Dr . Gall proved a true het . Legouv 6 did
write , and wrote well prop and successfully . These recollections of sixty years prove that the old
author can still write most charmingly . At the present day , as in the days of
Wilhelm Meister , the drama is in the ascendantso we find the principal story in this
number , written by the director J . of the Comedie Franeaise 4 , M . Jules Claretie . It is called
La Corde , ' and begins with the journey to Paris of an old country lawyer , who , like Major
Pendennis , is determined to break off an engagement between the hero of the tale and a Parisian actress . How he fares in his
attempt remains to be seen . Sufficient , howeveris told in the first two chapters to whet
the curiosity , of the reader . Another story is by M . Alexandre Dumas fils—also , like the
two contributors already named , a dramatist . Still another dramatist -Jean Kichepin
describes with graphic ability , a Paris street in , October . When we add that the other
contributors are Jules Simon , Victor Cherbuliez , the DeGoncourtsandlast — ( not least ) H . M . Stanley
we need say , no more to recommend / La Lec - , ture , which is embellished with a portrait JL of
