I . The Text . The author ' s text is given entire , without garbling or mutilation . It has been subjected to careful and critical scrutiny , and in ,, doubtful or corrupt passages the best readings of former editors have been adopted , or new and preferable readings substituted , the grounds for and against all changes of importance being fully set forth in the notes . To each play is appended a synopsis of original emendations adopted in it or proposed by the editor . II . Introductions and Notes . The Introductions prefixed to each play are three in number . They are the outcome of a special study of Shakespeare carried on over a period of several years .
