Mr . D . C . Davies , F . G . S . —This gentleman , who was well known throughout North
Wales as a geologist and mining engineer , died suddenly on September 19 on board the vessel 'Angelo' while returning from Norway to Hull .
Mr . Davies , , who was fifty-eight years of age , was the author of several well-known works on mines and minerals . He was a frequent
contributor to the mining journals , the British Architectand other periodicalsand
occasionally contributed , to the British Quarterl , y . He was the author of a volume of lay sermons
called The Christ for all the Ages .

The firm of Swan Sonnenschein & Co . has admitted into partnership Mr . Francis Lowrey ,
M . A . ( Oxon . ) , of the Inner Temple . The full new style of the firm will include his name , together with that of Mr . Charles
Cochrane X ^ q Bas , who has been a member of it for some years past , and will be Swan Sonnenschein , Le Bas , & Lowrey , though , we
understand , the usual designation of Swan Sonnenschein & Co . will be maintained for ordinary purposes .
Mr . Ellis , of New Bond Street , has made over his business to his nephew , Mr . G . J . Ellisand Mr . J . P . Scruttonby whom it
will in , future be carried on under , the style of Ellis & Scrutton . The whole of the very
valuable collection of books formed by Mr . Ellis will be sold by auction by Messrs . Sotheby , Wilkinson , & Hodge , in November .
Messrs . Hat chard have made arrangements with Messrs . George Routledge and Sons to
take over the publication of Every GirVs Magazine from October 1 , 1885 . In its leading features the magazine will remain
what it has always been , viz ., a secular monthly magazine designed for the reading of girls between the ages of about twelve and
twenty years . The difficulty of providing for this class of readers is well known , but that it
