To-Day We Enter Upon A New Season. If It...
TO-DAY we enter upon a new season . If its prosperity may be anticipated from the
indications of coming events , we should say that the signs are most auspicious . The lists of
forthcoming works are not only important from a numerical point of view , but they also
contain the names of some books which promise to be great in the literature of the
century and of the world . Th —— irty — ^ j ^ years ago \ m . ^ the same mig ^ m-r ht truly mrbe
said . War then filled the minds of the English people with anxiety and excitement , but
troubles A . A . abroad did not entirely paralyse enterprise JL at home . 9 On referring to the
number of the PublishersCircular for October 1 , I 1855 , we find among the announcements of
i forthcoming works — the third and fourth volumes of ' Mr . Macaulay ' s " History of
England , " ' the fourth and fifth volumes of ' Mr . Merivale ' s " History of the Romans under the
Empire , " and the seventh and eighth volumes of * Moore ' s Memoirs , Journal and
Correspondence , ' edited by the Right Honourable Lord John Russell . Various books on Russian
subjects of course appear . ' Little Dorrit' is announced as the ' new serial in preparation
by Mr . Dickens . ' Mr . Charles Knight is to begin the issue in monthly parts of a * Popular
History of England / and * The Saturday 6 Review start next of month Politics . ' , Science , and Art' is to
Thirty years ago ! The time is brief , but all the writers we have named have passed
away , while their names and works have found a firm and enduring place in the affections
of the British nation . Then , as now , might be found the signs of
the extension of literature for the people . Cheap editions were being published in
numbers , and new works were being issued at popular prices . But present-day literature , in
that branch , is far more extensive than it was , and it is needless to say that it is rapidly
increasing . Nothing can be more striking , in looking over the lists of announcements with
which publishers have favoured us , than the imposing appearance of the host of new works
issued especially for the people . Great companies and great firms give continued attention
ito this increasing department , in which philanthropy , as well as mercantile enterprise ,
may be observed to work in unison . ; Probably the new books that will occupy a
large share , of public attention will , at the outset , be Dr . Schliemann's 'Tiryns , ' * The

& c . But by a reference to the following list J others will be noted which will in all likelihood ¦
be in demand . — — - " ^«^» ^^ ^^^ ™^ l We would especially notice the modern
advance in the publishing of series of books . Several important works of this description

are the * English Worthies' Series and the * Badminton Library , ' both from the press of
Messrs . Longmans & Co ; then we have Cassell ' s ' World ' s Workers' Series and the
'Rainbow' Series of novels from the same firm ; and Messrs . Macmillan & Co . have

besides their promised important series re- lating to the advancement of geographical
study . These are a few of the more important works of this description .
A perusal of the following lists will show that there is reason to be gratified with the
first promise of the season 1885-86 . * * Diaries and Almanacs . —In the next
issue ( October 15 ) of the Publishers' Circular some attention will be devoted to the
department of diaries and almanacs . Publishers of these works should communicate with
the Editor , who will be obliged if all suitable particulars — are forwarded to him as early as
possible . w
