commentators . And criticism of all sorts has more or less effect temporarily if not
perm anently , No critique , however feeble , however unfair , is perfectly innocuous . In
some remote , undreamed-of corner it has its baleful effect , and turns aside an intending
reader . Malicious or incompetent criticism j nay be powerless to injure an author ' s
posthumous fame , but it often seriously interferes with his efforts to earn his bread .
Carlyle ' s place is secure now , but Mr . Froude tells us that there was once a time when
Carlyle came face to face with starvation . ! The fact is scarcely creditable to the criticism
I of his day . Nor can that of ours gain credit by being * savage and unjust . ' The astute
Scotsman , though an empirical philosopher and no high moralist , declared honesty to be the
best policy . It is so in every calling and relation in life . Thieves are said to have a code
of honour , and critics are surely not without integrity . We think Mr . Howells exaggerates
in saying that anonymous criticism is * almost wholly an abuse , ' but it lies with itself to
i disprove the charge .
