William C . H . Hood . —We are sorry bo record the death of Mr . W . C . H . Hoodwhich
occurred recently at Brighton , at tbe , age of 69 years . Mr . Hood ' s father was a partner of
Mr . Whittaker , the founder of the firm of Whittaker _ _ _ _ & Co . _ Mr . Whittaker / was ___ sue _ -
ceeded by his nephew , Mr . Gilbert , and Mr . Hood by hi = * two sonsone of whom afterwards
retired . When Mr . Gilbert , diedthe business was carried on by Mr . William , 0 . H . Hood
until about two years ago , when it passed into the hands of another firm , although it still
exists under the old designation . M . Ernest David . —The death is
announced , at the age of 62 , of M . Ernest David , a well-known Franco-Jewish writer . He was
a native of Nancy . His articles in the TJnivers Israelite attracted a great deal of
attention . He translated into French George Eliot ' s * Daniel Deronda ' for the Indlpendance
Beige , which was afterwards republished by his brother-in-law , M . Calmann-Levy .
Besides important monographs on Sebastian Bach and Handelhe wrote ' La Poe ' sie et la Musi
dans la Cambrie , ' and ' Histoire de la Nota que - tion Musicale depuis ses Oiigines . '
