Tettsom's 'Hints Designed To Promote
in the action of Mr . Williams , Dr . Dale , and ; six other gentlemen who met together for the
purpose of considering what means might be adopted towards ameliorating the condition
of deserving authors who were in distress . David Williams is therefore justly held in
estimable remembrance as the founder of this beneficent fund . At first the progress of the
promoters was far from being encouraging . Only eight guineas were subscribed ; a sum
which went but a little way in the direction of bringing the proposal before the public . But
the work thus quietly commenced was destined to flourish . For ninety-six years it has held
a foremost place among the noblest of our charities . Practically the fund is intended to
relieve distressed men of letters , not only of Britain , but of all nations , thus giving a
remarkable example of the cosmopolitan character of British eleemosynary institutions .
It is not our intention here to speak in general terms of the admirable character of the work
performed through the existence of the Royal Literary Fund . Well-merited panegyrics have
been bestowed upon the institution by many of the most eminent men of the nineteenth
century , and we have no doubt that the praise will continue to be deserved . Examining the
detailed account of the work of the committee in 1884 , we find that forty-one applicants have
been relieved by grants amounting in the aggregate to £ 1 , 780 . The following table
shows how this sum was distributed : — ¦ 17 aaa > a Relieved * aa > aw ^^ IV at ** v b for B r the * J k 1 st * ' ^ r time ^* m afc ^ fc ^ ai ^ a' w . V . ^ £ *^ aar 995 ^ a » ^^ r ^** ^*^*^* * ^^ ^* *' ^^
