NEW EDITION OF B Century of ftaintere OF THE Bn ^ lteb Scbool ABBIDGED AND CONTINUED TO THE PRESENT TIME . BY R . REDGRAVE , C . B ., R . A ., and S . REDGRAVE . - - oo **** + * oo ¦ — — Standard Work on the History ^ of our English Painters was , when § HIS j originally published , rather out of the reach of the Student in consequence of its costliness , and is therefore less known to artistic readers than many other works of reference . There is no book tieating ^ of the Art of Painting in England which can compare with that of ~^ t he Messrs . Redgrave in comprehensiveness , and in the value of its critical analyses of the various styles of Painting practised in this Country . In its present form , while it presents in small compass the most important features of the original work , it contains in a handy and compact shape those facts likely to be most useful to Art Students and Amateurs . The number of those who interest themselves in Artists and Art progress is constantly increasing , and there are few subjects with which the Art Student of the present day need to make himself familiar of equal importance with the History of the Progress and Development , of our English School of Painting , Not only will a record be here found of the life and art activity of the founders of the English School , but the Works of our English Masters are examined in succession , and their beauties and merits analysed . The Notes on the methods of working adopted by the leading painters will be of the utmost possible use to those who are making a study of the Art of Oil Painting ; and the critical description of the various processes of painting is full of hints and suggestion to the young artist . Even to those Amateurs who are riot studying to become painters this work cannot fail to be of great value , as it abounds with artistic anecdotes and memoranda collected by the authors during their long artistic career-To School of Art Students the fact of Mr . R . Redgrave ' s long connection with the Science and Art Department , and his intimate connection with the Teachers and the Schools of Art throughout the Kingdom , will lend special interest to this important contribution to the literature of the Fine Arts .
