A Uthors And Publishers And The Growth -...
prove a drug in the market is a result which staggers him , and in the shock of
disillusionment he is only too apt to lay the blame at the door of his publishers , men who , for reasons of
their own , are truly concerned in his success . He flatters himself that if the book had been
cheaper or dearer , better printed or more attractively bound , its fate would have been
quite different . Sometimes he flies off on a different tack , and is confident—with a
confidence which makes the experienced smile —that , if the book had only been more
widely advertised , edition after edition would have been eagerly snapped up , since all that
was needed to ensure success in such a case was to draw public attention to the work .
We readily admit that the rank and file of modern authors have certainly not discovered
a silver mine , though the rewards of literature to mere scribblers to-day are often vastly in
excess of their merits . Even their condition is seldom so bad , moreover , as that which once
prevailed amongst their betters—at the period when Oliver Goldsmith pawned his flute , for
example , and Dr . Johnson and Richard Savage wandered disconsolate and homeless all night
through the dreary and deserted streets of London .
In these days , when a love of literature or the affectation of such a sentiment everywhere V
abounds , the successful author has the publishing world at his feet , and can , within
reasonable limits , make his own terms . 'Make yourself a name , and I will publish
anything you write , ' was the answer of a Paris publisher to Dumas , and that is
practically what they all say . Authors naturally take their goods to the best market , and when
they have gained audience with the public they are tolerably able , as a rule , to look
after their own interests . The books which sell largely , it must be remembered , form only
a way small into proportion print , and the of those publisher which ' s * find pickings their '
often exist only in the author ' s imagination ; there isin short , a great deal of common
, sense in the recent remark of a witty American man of letters : * An author ' s pay is very much
like the price of milk ; it depends somewhat on the marketand a good deal on—the milk . '
, Unfortunately , in spite of its truth , this is just the kind of opinion which beginners in
literature are apt to despise .
