" Lyou and Stubbs / 'he may know where to lay his finder on those particular points of law , and liberty and common sense which those distinguished characters are doomed to be ignorant of all the days of their lives .
We had intended to give the summing \ m of the learned judge in this week ' s Star , but Mr Roberts ' announcement renders this unnecessary . When we have the whole trial before us we shall be able to comment on the principles invoked in it . In the meantime , we ate happy in being able to state that the most beneficial effects have alread y resulted , Several men on picket—walking up aud down and
talking to strangers and to each other—who , before the trial . were constancy molested by the pulicr , are now suffered Jo iollow their peaceful and honourable avocation without any disturbance or interference . We are glad of this , not only as it shows that constables are not above learning the law , but that : they are capable also of reading the Northern Star . If they will continue this commendable practice , they will be all the better for . it . .

PARLIAMENTARY REVIEW . The Commons resumed . their . sittings after the Easter recess on Monday ; and , judging from their proceedings during the week , up to the time we write , have felt very much like masons and joiners on , Monday morning after a day ' s cessation from work : they have not yet got rid of the , stiffnessand wanned fairly to their work .- Notwithstanding the rumours tliat it is the decided intention of Ministers to push husiness on as rapidl y as possible in order that Parliament may he dissolved earlv in
June at the latest , with a view to a new election , tlie practical progvess of . the week ) m been small . The Irish measures remain where they were , with the exception of the Fever Bill , which has passed through another stage on its way to Ihc Upper House The Waste Lands Reclamation Bill , which again made its appearance on the business paper for Tuesday night , was postponed till Tuesday next , when , if some fresh excuse or obstacle , roal or pretended , does not present itself , we indulge in the . anticipation - that this suspiciously delayed measure will at last make its appearance in a definite shape .
The naval , military , and economical members had all the talk to themselves on Monday . The motion for going into a committee of supply brought out "hon . and gallant members , " with a long catalogue of gritvances , in both brandies of our service . Sir De Lacy Evans was the mouthpiece of the soMier , Sir C . Napier of the navy ; and between them they made a tolerably lengthy inventory of faults , lilnndcrs , and evils ; white , on tbe other hand , Messrs Hume ami Williams—those Siamese economists— we're equally valuble and lengthy in their arithmetical criticisms on the various votes submitted
to the committee . We wish tbar the working man , who has to pay the piper for both branches of the service , had people in the . House who would bring his case as often before the Legislature as the " gallant" gentlemen have recently been doing in . the instance of the Army and Navy . Bst , apparently .-his only duty is to work and pay—his highest virtue in the eyes of modern legislators , patient and silent submission to a state of things which wings from him the uttermost farthing , for t !; e support of iiiMitufions which he alone must not reap anv benefit
from . One curicus and ' notable point about , these discussions is , the wonderful unanimity with which all " haii . and gallant" legislators , whether in re ] coats or blue , agree in declaring that we must have an increase of our forces by land and tea , and the defences , and fortifications of our 'harbours and shores multiplied and strengthened . The Times \\ iS become an ataiurist on this point also , and not long Mnce had a mysterious and dreadful article , which must have half killed with fri ght al ! the ncr . vgiis old ladies and timid bachelors of ihe empire .
It appears that some-time , front--somewhere , a griifra ] inroad is ' to be made by the combined armies of the Continental Nations , who , though not by any means loving each other , a-n each ami al ! cnrdially united in hating [ Great Britain ' : that this host may , any fine night or morning , by the r . id of steamers , land upon our shores , and without let or hindrance march straightway to London , ( k lhrone " . our most gracious Sovereign , " plant a new'd ynasty ) : • her place ; send the Lords and Coiiimcnsin I ' srtiiimsnt assembled to tbe ri ghtabout ; confiscate .

Wednesday was a grand field-day for the Protestant bigots . All the old women who live in constant fear of the Lady who sits on ihe seven hills dressed in a scarlet robe , and who it designated by them in language more / orcilile than polite , " mastered in the House that day to defeat the repeal of s ; mdry obsolete and never-enforced disabilities on Italian Catholics from the [ Statute Book . Lord Lyndhurst , la < it session , at '' one fell swoop" cleared away a heap of this foul and fiUliy rubbish . Mr Watson ' s bill would have followed up efficiently . the moral scavenging , but the Inglisca , Phiraptrcs , Spoimers—we were going to add " spoonies " -of the true old Protestant bnert , rushad to the rescue . Dear to their pious and tender souls "is the wisdom of our ancestors ;" r . n-1 , no doubt , in their inward spirit , some of them
gman heavily over the departed g lories of Sniithfielil , when the faggot blazed merrily around noneonforining limbs , and sent up a sweet-smelling savour from that hol y sacrifice offered to a God of Love . The victory they achieved on Wednesday must have proved some consolation to them , as showing that , though they have fallen upon degenerate days , the cruel spirit of religious intolerance is not dead , but only sleeping . If favouring circumstances como together , men may yet be roused , by the fierce slogan of a piiesil y chief , to do battle to the death against the citizenshi p , ay , even the life , of his lellow-lioiug , because ! l « s optoiona are different upon a subject on which neither can cfc-MM » i 8 < nifeanything 1 . anii to quarrel about which is as insane as about the colour of their liair or the shape of their noses .

Hie Dissenting agitation against the Government scheme of Education ' presents too many features in common with the preceding melancholy exhibition of bigotry ami intolerance , to carry with it our sympathy , however much we may dissent from the schome itself upon other grounds . ' We are glad to &ee that ( he whole question will be opened on Mumlay night by the motion of Mr Duncombe , and till then dofer any further remark on' what is undoubtC ' -Hy the most actively agitated out-door question of the wionwn ' i .
On Thursday nkht ibe Peers resumed their sittings in that portion of the New Palace set apart for them by the Queen . Jt is almost impossible by mere words to give any idea of the truly regal magnificeuceof this splendid Hall . It is conceived in the true spirit of artistic genius , and the mediaeval style , avowedly set up as ihe standard , has baen faithfully , but nsttervileiy followed . Tlie exquisite manner in which the colours have been harmonized and blended , causes the mass of golden carvings , deep and brilliant hues , and gorgeous draperies poVflered
with- gold , to fall upon the eye with a subdued , chaste , but inexpressibly rich effect . The glance uamlers from object to object without once encountering anything har-. lt cr abrupt , but rather finding all melt into each other in beautiful gradation , and the boldest contrasts harmonized by the skill of the consummate anists . it is , in short , a magnificent specimen of the ait and skill of the 19 th century , and will long staiwi , we trust , as a proud monument of ihe ability of the artizans whose kbour has reared it .
The Lords were as proud of their new Hail as a boy of his first Easter suit , anrl mustered in great numbers . ' Conspicuous among the rest was the Episcopal-bench , which had a great number of iavmili-oved and silk-aproned occupants . Several peer esses wer # also present in ihe body of the House , and tbe siile gallery , appropriated toWiuhfrs of the Hou » e of Commons , was visited hv most of the lc&ding members of that House in the course of their lordships ' short Miiingof an hour and a quarter . The business transacted was very trifling - , in fact , nobody had settled down to husiness , the faculties were all absorbed by the spacious and brilliantly decorated apartment in which thov were assembled .
The only person who seemed to have ai all an ap . petite for work was Henry , Lord Brougham and Yisux , and he threatened to ' have the House cleared if less noise was not made—a hint which only terrified the talkers for the remainder of his lordship ' s observations .
