The East . —The annihilation of the opium trade with China will deprive the Fops of our " Ipj a * Empire" of nearly two millioni a year of annual revenue . As the Chinese Government menaced the liberties , and even th * lives of oar profit-hunters , these worthies were under the necessity te give up opium to the value of two millions sterling . For this amount our adventurers at Bombay have peti . tioned th « Government . Here is-tae plain English of their petition :- " We , her Majesty ' s profit-mongenng subjects have , for a long time , been driving
un a contrapand ana most lucrative trade with China , at the expense of tie health and morals of the Chinese nation . The Government of that country tinding we w « uld n » t desiist , by fair means , seized our pereona , and clapped us into vile durance , and before we got out we had to give up all in our possession of tbe smuggled article . Now a loss of two millions has been sustained , and we humbly submit that the working men of England have a better right to bear this loss than we have . We , therefore , trust that her Majesty ' s Government will take steps to remunerate us out . of the taxes of Great Britain . " We have not the slightest doubt bat " her Majesty ' s Government" will lend a favourable ear to this modtst request .
A HORRIBLE , FRATBICTDB took place at Sfcteron a few days ginee . A farmer named Bruu havmg , according to the custom in that part of France , left a considerable part of hi » property to his eldest aon * Joseph ., to the exclusion of his brother John , the latter Jay in ambush as his brother was proceeding with his mother to a farm which had been leased to him during the life of his father , and shot him in the breast . He then proceeded to th « farm in question , where he shot his sister-in-law . . Not satisfied with this double crime , he began to abuse his own wife , who happened to be oa the spot , and reloaded his gun with the intention of shooting her also , but wa * prevented by the neighbours , and fltd to the neighbouring mountains , since which ume he has not been heard aU—Galignani ' s Messenger .
The Courritr du Midi » f Montpelier representa the whole district aloBg that shore of the Mediterranean ^ hayh g Buffered so severely from drought , that the ears of corn have withered before they came to maturity , and that the crops must be mowed for litter . The luzerne and other artificial g > asses hav « almost entirely periihed on the ground , the * olives have been burnt up as eoon as they were formed , and lay in blackt-ned heaps under the trees . Tha vines likewise are said i * be in bad condition , and are expected to produce but a small quantity of wine , of inferior quality . Such a continuance of dry weather has not been known in ihe south of France for many -rears .
Flood . —The towa of Weissenfels , in Prussia , a * we learn from the Journal du Hautet Bas RhiZ na « escaped narrowly from total destruction . On he 19 : h alt ., a water spout burnt over it , and Caused a flood , which carried away many buildings near the road teNaumbarg . Next night a similar catastrophe was repeated in a more tremendous degree , when the flood was so powerfulthat it tore up the pavement , tilling ^ the cellars , and even forcing its way through the lower windows in the streets . Many houses , walls , bridges , and trees , were earned away , placing the lives of the inhabitants in tne utmost peril , though it is not stated that any were lost . As late as the morning of the 25 th , the watar stood in the streets and houses to a height of six or aevea feet . °
A LETTER FROM TbIPOLI , dated July 18 says— " Almost every day the Pasha exhibits some proof of hia hatred towards the Europeans , and invent * all sorts of cruelties and annoyances against them . Lately a Maltese and an aged Greek , placed under the protection of the English consul , suffered tbe punishment of torture , aad were bastinadoed for an imaginary offence . These two unfortunate men were accused of having criminal relation * with a Turkish Udy , and this Severe punishment was inflicted on them without their being allowed to say a word in their defence . The cautH ^ of ail the at rocities which are committed n cupidity , and unfortunate creatures are placed undet the rack , in order to extort money from them . "Courier .
Alarming Firr . —A fire took place a few day * ago at Semur , in ihe Cote d'Or , from a very unusual cause . An inhabitant of one of the Faubourgt having to root np some old trunks of trees foi winter fuel , placed gunpowder , in them as the raotf expeditious mode of accQmpHishiBg his object , and then blew them tip . The detonation was heard ovei ihe whole t « wn , and tha trunks flew into the aii like grape shot . Some of the barniag fragment * fel upon the thatched roofs , and , notwithstanding tht assiatanpe that was at band , fivts houses were burnee to the ground . The unfortunate author of the cab mity Immediatel y , and without waiting for a claim indemnified all the sufferers .
Deadly Ehpountbr . — "We learn from a pas senger on board the steamer Rodney , arrived thL morning . from Alexandria , that J . W . ' Moore , edi tor and proprietor of the Red Rivsr Whig , was sha dead in the street in that city on the 1 st inst . i gentleman , named King Holion , connected with tin office of the Republican ut that place , was the au thor of this horrible deed . There had been for som > time a meet bitter controversy between tlwss tw . printa relative to the publication in the Whig ot ¦
letter reflecting oa Mr . Martin Gordon , of thi oity—a controversy which finally led to a challenge oa the part of Holsori , and which Moore refused ae otptiag , on the ground that Holsou was not a gen ^ tleman . HoWnhad sworn revenge , and arme < himself for the purpese of shooting Moore on sight They met , as it appears , on the 1 st instant , whei Holson first snapped a gun at bis antagonist , an afterwards shot him down wi th a pistol . Moore wa also armed , but drew no weapon , and died in a fei minutes after being shot . —American Paper .
Shocking Accidents . —Private letters froi St . Petersburg !* , received at Hamburgh , say tha the fete at St . Petersburgh , which took place on th 21 st of July , was followed by a deplorable acciden ' A great number of large and small boats , being ° their return to the city , were upset in a hurricane i the bay , about four o ' clock in the afternoon , o which occasion some hundreds of person * perisbe in the waves . It is reported that the number drowne wag between five and six hundred , but it is hop * that ibis is an exaggeration .
