, Newcastle Icorw. Market, Tuesday.—We H...
, Newcastle _iCoRw . Market , Tuesday . —We had a good supply , of wheat . at : market to-day , both from the growers and coastwise , but the attendance of . buyers being rather small , no advance in price could be obtained , and a moderate extent of business was transacted in all . descriptions ' of quality , at last Saturday ' s rates . Barley met a very limited demand , and , was looking . lower , as our maltsters , generally speaking , have large stocks on hand . The inquiry ibr malt was entirely confined to the choicest samples . Rye sold slowly at ouriast . quotations . In beans and peas , there was _> not much passing . / . Oats remained without alteration in value .
Londos _CoRtr Exciuxge , Monday , Feb . 9 . —The announcement of the failure of a large maltster at Ware , in Hertfordshire , whose liabilities on'this market are upwards of £ 12 , 000 , cast A gloom over the proceedings here , 'especially as it is known that the government is indebted in a large sum for duties . During the last week , up to Saturday evening , the arrivals of English wheat were , comparatively speakiiig , somewhat on the increase , yet they were by no means seasonably large . _OfiEnglish _barlevand malt the . receipts were very extensive ; those of all other grain , ofhonie produce ; moderate . ¦ Of Irish oats tho arrivals were small ; but . from abroad upwards of 15 , 000 quarters , on -wmeb . itis probable the duty will be paid , came- to hand . Tho fresh supply of foreign wheat aud flour-has- been good ; but , under present cirenrnstahoes , it has been landed in bond . ' From Essex a fair average quantity , of wheat came to hand to-day , coastwise as . well . as by ' land carriage and sample , but that from' Kent , Cambridgeshire , & c , was small . Although the attendance of buyers was
rather larger , the demand for that-article was not to say brisk ; nevertheless , the finest qualities of both red and white moved of steadily at very , full prices . In other kinds ¦ but fow _sajes were effected at' last Monday ' s quotations , yet a fair clearance was effected prior to the close of the market . The show of free ' foreign wheat was small , yet thc demand for that article was somewhat inactive , at unaltered currencies . Holders of foreign wheat _nntlor lock wcre asking most extravagant prices . This , of course , checked the inquiry , and so little was doing thatthe currencies were almost nominal . Tho supply of barley _, was very extensive , owing to which the sale for it was in a depressed state , aud in some instances the factors were compelled to submit to a further reduction in prices of ls . per quarter . The show of malt being good , and the buyers operating with great caution , the malt trade was dull , and prices had a downward tendency . In _o-its very little was doing , at'barely , but at nothing quotable beneath , last week's currencies . Beans , peas , and Hour dull , but not cheaDer .

London SMirHFiEtD Caiti . k " "Mabket , 'M . 9 .- _» Since Monday last the imports of live stock from the continent for our market have been ona very liberal scale , the time of year considered , viz ., 140 oxen and cows , and 2 calves , from . Rotterdam ; . 200 . cows , 40 oxen , and 300 sheep"from" HarJingen , together witJi 20 oxen from Hamburg . "Tho whole ofthe ; above supplies have _beet _freOeived from ' steamers * iri excellent condition ; At the outpbrts the receipts , arising from the comparatively high-prices rulinghere , have been unimportant . To-day . we had on offer 250 beasts arid 310 sheep from ' Holland , with which the trade was iri a sluggish state , ' and previous quotations were not supported . ' From our grazing districts the arrivals of beasts fresh up this morning were on the
increase , and of very superior quality , especially as relates to the Hereford ** , Devons , Soots , and homebreds . Notwithstanding the attendance of both town and country buyers was tolerably numerous , and the weather more favourable for slaughtering , the beef trade was in a very sluggish state , at a decline in the currencies obtained on this day se ' nnight . of 2 d . pec 8 lbs ., the very highest figure for the best Scots not excceding' 4 s . 4 d . per 8 My and at which it clearance was with difficulty effected . ; f he bullock droves front Norfolk , Suffolk , Essex ,. and Cambridgeshire'were composed of 600 Scots and homebreds . _Fromthe northern counties we received 500 shorthorns ,. froni tho western and midland districts G 00 Herefords , De ' _vonsj ' runts ,- die ., from the other parts of England
400 " of various breeds , " from Scotland 00 Scots , and . from _Ireland-70 beasts . The remainder of the supply was derived from abroad and the neighbourhood of the metropolis . The . ' nmuhcrsoi' sheep were again _, unusually _limited / . the deficiency in them , compared with those exhibited ' at the corresponding _market-day in , 1845 , 'being about 10 , 000 head ; hence the mutton trade was again brisk , and last Monday ' s advanced prices were firmly , supported . The best Old Downs readily producedos . 6 d . per Slbs . In many quarters allusion has been made to the extremely high prices at which sheep have been selling here for some time past , but the cause of the present range of currencies is easily , explained .. Qur , readers will recollect that during . the greater portion of 1844 { owing to the
scarcity of keep in our larger agricultural districts , the result of an unusually dry summer ) , the graziers were compelled to send forward their sheep , and dispose of them at almost any sacrifice . The great losses thus sustained at that period prevented many of the large flock masters from purchasing adequate supplies of lean stock for the then forthcoming season . In addition to these circumstances ; the epidemic carried off immense numbers of sheep . The consequence has been that in many parte of the country there is an absolute scarcity of that description of stock , and to exemplify our remarks , we may observe that on many farms it is impossible for the stock to consume the large quantities ' of turnips and ' other pabulara
produced last year ; hence , mthose districts where sheep ave in moderate abundance , the graziers caa scarcely [ afford to dispose of their stock , whatever may be the prices here . This , then , is the principal cause ofthe present enhanced rates , and which will probably be maintained for some time hence . In order further to strengthen our observations , we beg to observe that during last year there were exhibited here nearly three hundred sheep less than in 1844 . The few prime lambs on sale this morning sold readily at 7 s . per 8 . 11 ) 3 . Calves , _thainumbera of whicli were small , moved off steadily at full prices . The pork trade was very steady , at last week ' s quotations . The supply of pigs was moderate . .

_Manchester Cor ' x Market , Saturday , Feb . 7 . — The trade during the week has been ' of a more animated character than we had it in our power to notice for some time past , and a fair extent of business has been transacted iri flour , chiefly , however , in approved marks of choice quality , without material variation from thc previous currency . Oats and oatmeal have likewise met a stead y sale ; the former at a slight decline in price , but the latter at fully late rates . At onr market this morning the demand for wheat was oh a very limited scale , without alteration in the prices of this day se ' nnight .
