Macclesfield.—Gnoss Outrage Bv Tor Polic...
. —The following arc the contents of a placard posted throughout this town on Saturday moniiiifr last ;—• ' To the inhabitants of Macclesfield Fellow Townsmen , —A case of unparalleled oppression and injustice has just been perpetrated upon a poor man , James Elchells , by policeman Ncrbury , who , on l ' riday Inst , accompanied by a man named Clayton , came to his house , on llichmond-hill , and without warrant or authority , forcibly broke open his doors , and carried away a loom . Application was made to the u agistratcs , on Wednesday , for justice against this lawbreaking , house-breaking policeman , but the roagistvmen refused—saying it was not within their jurisdiction— coolly telling the poor man to enter an action
against tho house-breaker . AVorking men ! is not this a bitter mockery of your pover ty ? Your houses may bo broke open by policemen—the sanctity and security of your dwellings violated—and no justice for you , except you are able to boar the heavv expense of a law suit . But if one of you were to break into a policeman ' s house , would there then be jurisdiction ? Yes ! and a law soon found to punish von severely . If the magistrates have not the power to adjudicate in a case like this , it is Irish time that a law should be made to bring justice cheap to the | 'Oor man ' s home . But if they lu < vc the power , and refuse to do it , it is high time also that their conduct shotiM beinquired into . A public meeting will be held on Park-green , on Monday , July 21 st . at seven o ' clock '
for the purpose of memorialisim : the Secretary "J State to inquire in the conductof the magistrates , ami to petition Parliament ; likewise to take such stef ^ as will enable us to secure the valuable services of N P . Roberts , Esq ., in -bringing the guiitv parlies to justice . Working men ' . your poverty prevents yo « tnth ' utaWfy from buying justice , but unitedly Jov can accomplish anything . In this case the rkhis oi all arc at stake . If the guilty parties arc allowed to £ » unpunished , on Englishman ' s house is no longer 1 » ' castle . ' Attend the nicotine , and prove votir dtW munition that law and justice shall not be tramp * upon with impunity . " The meeting was attentW by upwards of 6000 neoole of all classes , who » ci \
highly gratified by the speeches of Messrs . West »« Bernctt . Every person present testified their gr » "j lic-ation at the course that had becn adopted , j 1 ! ' were unanimous in their determination to support Three cheers were given for the Charter , and t 11 meeting quietly dispersed . . j Unbearable . — -A bear lately escaped from l " " from a collection of wild beasts ' , and caused con ;" ' able alarm amongst the inhabitants . It was at ' : killed by an inspector of forests , who , seeing * v ° ' i ma \ come out of a thicket , fired a pistol at it . ' broke ono of its front paws , and with ar ^ shot in the chest wounded it so severely that iii » hours it died . The skin was given up to the o ) t and the skeleton is to be placed in the muse "" Ghent .
