E Emigration- Fkoji Bristol.—The Followi...
E Emigration- fkoji Bristol . —The following ( from Custom-house authoiitvitv ) is the number of ships with emigrants which have left the port durin ° - thehe last eight years , ending the 31 st December : —1844 , 10 ships , 159 passed ;; er ; ers ; 1 S 45 , 10 ships , 19 S passengers ; 1846 , 6 ships , 182 passengers- 1847 : 2 2 ships , 623 passengers ; 1848 , 20 ships , 1 , 47 . 3 passengers ; 1849 , 24 ships ' , 81 , 895 passengers ; 1850 , 22 ships , 1 , 920 passengers : 1851 , 29 ships , 1958 [[ a & sscngers ; and for the six months ending the 30 th of June , 1852 . 14 ships , 6 ! , 695 passengers . ] Foeeigx Watches axd Clocks . —It appears from the trade and naviga'kiou returns just published that there has been an increase in the value of jraratches and clocks imported last month , as compared with the like period of iiuhe preceding year . Of clocks , the value imported in the month ended the iitjfli of August , 1851 , was £ 5 , 227 , and in the month ended the 5 th ult ., £ 7 , 297 ; yfc-hil 2 of watches the value in August , 1851 , was £ 7 , 369 , and in August ! : aiast £ 9 . 998 .
Importation of j ^ ggs . —There were 10 , 205 , 787 eggs imported into this Mconntry in the month ending the 5 th ult . Ixceeased Consumption of Tea . —The official returns just issued show mat in the month ending the 5 th of August , 1850 , the quantity of tea entered ftfor home consumption was 4 , 376 , 2491 b . ; in the like period of 1851 , 4 , 730 , 1261 b . aiand in the month ended the 5 th ult ,, 4 . 914 , 7001 b . A Xew Bctldixg Material . —An invention has , it is stated , fust been ppatented for the adaptation of a preparation of coke and other substances , by which bricks , paving slabs , door and stair steps , tiles , pipes , blocks , railway ssleepers , and other articles of general use by builders . & c , can be produced with a perfection and at a cost which , it is expected by the inventor , will ( effect a complete revolution in the building trade . The price at which it is ] proposed to offer the coke brick to the public is scarcely one third of the
< cost of the clay-brick , while , in point of durability , it is superior to the best . article supplied from the kilns . The manufacture , according to the specih' cation , is effected by means of cast iron moulds , the interior of which are of the exact dimensions of the common brick ; in this mould a certain quantity of fiuif , or waste coal , powdered coke , charcoal , or cinders , is placed , and being carbonised , the amalgamated material swells to the exact form required . "When taken from the mould , it undergoes a finishing process , in which varnish is applied to the eud or side , having while wet a coating of powdered glass , with an admixture of a mineral coloring matter , sifted over it . The brick is then vitrified , when a beautiful glaze of any required colour is produced , and the article is ready for use . During the manufacturing process the fumes are passed through water . The material is rendered iire-prcof by the application of the muriate of alumina , and is impervious to atmospheric influences by the nature of its formation .
Magnetic Balloon Ascent . Applications have , it is said , heen made to the proprietors of the different public places of entertainment , from whence balloon ascents take place ,-by an individual who wishes to make an ascent suspended thirty feet below the car , hy magnetic attraction . The method hy which he proposes to accomplish this feat is this : he possesses a magnet , the attractive power of which will sustain a weight of 150 lbs . ; this is to he hung l > y a line 30 feet below the car ; round his body is fixed an iron zone , which on being broaght near the magnet firmly attaches itself thereto . Electric Illumination . It is stated that Mr . Page , the government architect , contemplates the employment of electricity in lighting up the Suspension bridge now in progress at Chelsea , four elegant towers intended to receive"the lamps appearing in the design .
Doous and Doorways in Turin . In no city of Europe are there more magnificent doorways than in Turin ; indeed , the whole architectural wealth « f the place seems to have been treasured up for this one feature ; not only are the art and labour exquisite , hut the material is often of the richest and most costly description . * Xor are the doorways only remarkable , hut the doors themselves are equally worthy of attention , the carving on many of them being of equally good ' design and execution , and the tout ensemble is is generally rendered complete by the guards of bronze which protect them from injury when open . The Builder . -
Statistics of the Population of California . An average of the hes advised computations would place our present population at 240 , 000 . Arrivals « f passengers during the first six months of the year were about 40 , 000 . There is every appearance that the seaward immigration will continue to be as large for six months to come , and , assuming the overland column to number 40 , 000 , and allowing for departures 20 , 000 , we may expect to have a population of 300 . 000 hy the close of the year , some 50 per cent , larger than the presumed population at the opening of the present year . This calculation does not embrace Oregon . The agricultural interests of the state are m a flourishing condition , and most of the industrial pursuits are prospering . Fishing Statistics . The total number of boats now engaged in the herring fishing , from Aberdeen to Zetland , approaches 3 , 000 . These 3 , 000 boats are manned hy fully 15 . 000 men and bovs . Supposing each has a dntt ot 30 nets , and supposing them all at sea at one time , there would at the same moment he 90 , 000 nets floating under the waters .
