Gardening Calendar. Ki Kitches Gabdex.—I...
GARDENING CALENDAR . Ki Kitches Gabdex . —In . earthing up Celery the greatest care is necessary co Mo prevent any portion of the earth from falling into the heart of the plant , whifo-lnch would prevent the upright growth of the inside leaves , and spoil its uppfeppearance for the table ; nor should the earth he pressed too closely round ffhe the upper part of the plant , as frequently , when such is the case , it bulges ¦ ant ont below . The best practice is to tie each part up loosely with matting liaiiliaving previously removed the suckers and small leaves , ) and then a little eearlearth can he added every week , as the plant increases in height . Another cconicommon error arises from earthing Celery too soon . It should be allowed to « oroorow to a considerable size before earthing up is attempted ;
andbefremuemiently soaked with water , as but little rain will reach the roots afterwards : St sit should likewise never be touched when the plants are damp . Leeks in idri' drills may have earth drawn up to them hy the hoe . Autumn Cauliflowers mat and Brocoli planted in shallow trenches should now have heen filled up ; for ninl unless in very dry situations the natural rains will keep them moist . Late Pe : Peas aud Beans will require close attention , to prevent mildew ; well supply th < the former vifi liquid manure . The advancing winter crops of Broccoli , Bo Borecole , & e ., should be kept frequently hoed , and vacant ground may yet be fill filled up with the later kinds . Tomatoes are likely to be late , and the leaves « li ^ hading the fruit should he removed ; aud prevent the plants from making an any further growth by constant stopping . As time permits , the Potato crop m : mav he taken up , beginning with the earliest kinds first .

STATISTICS OF THE WEEK . BIRTHS AND DEATHS IN THE METROPOLIS . The official return says : —In the week ending last Saturday 96 G deaths t were registered in the metropolitan districts , showing a considerable decrease ( on the mortality of August . In the ten corresponding weeks of the years 1 1842-51 the average number of deaths was 1 , 143 , which , with a correction for i increase of population , becomes 1 , 257 . In comparing the deaths of last week ¦ with this average it is proper to hear in mind that the latter is much ini creased hy the cholera that prevailed at this season in 1 S 19 . Last week the births of 7 S 5 hoys and 739 girls , in all 1 , 524 children , were registered in London .
Troops in the Colonies . —From a Parliamentary paper just published it appears that the number of troops employed in our colonial possessions daring the year 1850 , was : —Officers , 1 , 675 , and men , 88 , 752 , at a cost of £ 1 . 329 , 656 . This is exclusive of artillery and engineers . Population of Belgium . — -Ins Belgian Government has just published returns , from which it appears thet the total population of Belgium on the 81 st of December , 1850 , was 4 , 407 , 241 . Iu the course of the year the number of births was 131 , 416 , and of deaths 92 , 909 . The Hallway System . —Apart from its higher developments , a few very gross
facts will show the position of the railway system in our country . It appears that up to the end of 1850 railway companies had raised a sum equal to £ 250 , 270 , 000 sterling , and retained powers to raise a further sum of £ 122 , 500 , 000 . In June , 1851 , the number of persons employed on railways open for traffic was 63 , 500 , and on those in course of construction 43 , 000 . In the united kingdom , 85 , 500 , 000 persons travelled by railways in 1851 , and paid £ 8 , 000 , 000 sterling for doing so ; while , for the transpor of goods £ 7 , 000 , 000 were paid , according to the official report of Captain Simmons , recently published . . ¦ ¦ v .
