Smithfield Market.—Monday. —The General ...
Smithfield Market . —Monday . —The general tone of trade at Smithfield this morning was heavy , and a decline in prices for everything took place .. A clearance was far from being effected By the close . The cause of the reaction is attributed to the plentiful supply offering , and the comparative dulness in the retail demand . The number of Beasts was 2 , 8 S 0 , wliich met with a dull inquiry , at a fall of 4 d . per stone for inferior coarse quality , and 2 d . npon middling and the best descriptions , The supply oi Sheep and Lambs comprised 2 S . 250 head ' of fair average quality . The Mutton ' trade was heavy , and ' prices declined from „ 2 d , to 4 d . per stone . The Lamb trade was the finest of all , but buyers were not very active . The warmer state of the weather is favourable to the trade in . this kind of meat . ,: . ,, ¦ . Salfokd New Cattle Market . — Wednesday— We were well supplied with stock , and a good portion of the Beasts were from Ireland , and in prime condition . Sheep' too , in rather better show than of hitc . The best Beef Gd , to ( ijd . per lb ., prime Mutton OJd . to 7 d . per lb . -Nearly all wassoldup . ., .. '
Newcastle Cattxe Market . —Tuesday . —At our market this - morning there was a good show of Beasts , which was of a superior quality ; tlie smallest and . worst supply of Sheep we hiive had for the last four years ' , and a middling supply of Swine . In the Beast market , notwithstanding the increase of numbers from last week , there was a good demand for all sorts , prices steady , and all [ sold tip . In-the Sheep market there was a brisk demand , and prices were a shade hi gher , and all sold . A slow demand for Pigs : prices looking down , and a part left unsold . The following quotations were fully supported . Prices : —Beasts , small cutters , Cs . 3 d . ; Steers of the best quality , Cs . Birmingham Corn Exchange.-Wedsesdav.-Dur...
Birmingham Corn Exchange .-WEDsESDAv .-Durine lie present week but little Wheat has been offering , an ! t lias realised somewhat over the currency of ' last market aaj . Barley continues in limited demand , Oats held for lfmPtedlan ?^" ^ ' ' J hfch **™* 3 «™ l > Kcu with for Tp » n , ? p ™» w Few factions reported in Beans . Leeds Com Makket .-Oui- arrival of ill Grain is short Good Wheat is readily taken off at U . p <* < lttZE to-day and there is a little more doh . l in second ^ qua ities , at late rates . There is a staa ^ SX > 3 [ Barley , at full prices . In Oats and Beans there is no alteration . LiVKKFOot Corn Makket . —Moxday . —Since last Tuesday the importation of Grain , Meal , and Flour" from
Ireland has been larger than for several weeks past " and with the exception of 6940 barrels of Flour from the United States , the arrivals from abroad have been moderate . The business in free Wheat during the week has been on a moderate scale , andprieos have been barely maintained . Flour has had a dull sale , and both sacks and barrels have been sold the turn cheaper . The demand for Oats has been limited , and there has been little change in their value . Oatmeal has sold slowly . Barley , Beans and Teas have had merely a retail sale . Indian Corn continues in request for both Ireland and Scotland , and full prices are obtained , The bonded market has at . tractd more attention than of lute , and several transactions have occured in both Wheat and Flour , but no change can be made on late quotations .
Manchester Corn Market . —Saturday . —Although the business transacted in Flour during the week has not been of so active a character as might have been anticipated from the reduced state of the stocks of that article , there has nevertheless been a fair consumptive demand for good fresh qualities , for which the improved currency of the proceeding market day was firmly , maintained . In either Oats or Oatmeal there was little passing ' without alteration in prices . ' : At our ' market this morning the demand for "Wheat was on a limited scale ; the best description were , however , held for rather more money , hut in other kinds no change can'bo'noted . Approved brands of Flour were in steady though not lively request , at previous rates . Oats were but little inquired for ; whilst Oatmeal of choice qu : ilitv , on the contrary , was much sought after , and realized fully the prices of this day se'nnight . ; ¦ .
HARRINGTON CORN MARKET . —WEDNESDAY . —At this market there was a fair attendance , but not much Wheat offering . There was a free sale at 3 d . per bushel advance , say 7 s 9 d to 8 s , 8 s 3 d and 8 s cd per 7 Ulhs . Oats , 3 s 9 d to 4 s per 4-jlbs ; Barley , 4 s 6 d to 4 s 9 d per COlbs . Flour , best seconds . 39 s common do ., 37 s ; some dealers , how ever , got Is per load more for each quality . Meal , 35 s to " 3 ( is per 2-lOlbs . Of Potatoes there was the largest supply that we Have had this year , but a very slow sale at Is . to Is 6 d pur load less money . Of pinkeyes , the bulk fetched 12 s 3 d , some 13 s ; fanners and short tops , , 9 s per load of 255 Vbs . Wakefield Corn Market . —Fbidat . —The market is again thinly supplied with grain . . There was a good inquiry for fresh and fine samples of'Wheat , at an advance of Is . per quarter , common descriptions also participated in the improvement . Heavy Barley rather dearer , in other sorts no alteration . Fine small Beans a trifle higher .
Oats and shelling , each in better request , at fully previons prices . Malt easy sale . Hull Corn Market . —TtrESDAy . —We have to report a better feeling in the Corn trade during the past week . There has been some inquiry for old Wheat , which has led to moderate business at full p rices . The weather has been unsettled and eold . ¦ At to day ' s market we had " only a small supply of Wheat from the farmers , which , with the better accounts from London , caused our millers to give fully Is . per qr . more money ; there was more doing in free foreign , and , owing to the firmness of holders , we quote the same advance as in english ; in bonded no transactions . ' Spring Corn unaltered . Linseed still con tinues very flat . Rape seed the same as last week . Linseed Cakes keep firm , without much business passing , llape Cakes are : in'f air demand at the quotations . Bones have a downward tendency , with very large supplies . Guano is but dull .
Richmond ( Yorkshire ) Corn Market . —Saturday . — We had a plentiful supply of all kinds of grain in our Market to day . "Wheat sold from 5 s . to 9 s ; oats 3 s . to 4 s -id barley , 4 s . to 4 s . 3 d ; beans 4 s . Cd . to 5 s . od . per bushel .
.St Ate '' Of Trade.' . . Leeds.—There H...
. ST ATE '' OF TRADE . ' . . Leeds . —There has not been quite so much business done , either on Saturday or Tuesday , as en the two previous market days . As regards quantity , however , more fine and middle qualities of cloths were sold than for some time past . Prices keep steady , and the stock of goods , preneraUy , is getting less in the hands of the manufacturers ' . There has also been less doing in tho warehouses this week , but more than was the case a few weeks ago . —Leeds Mercury . Manchester . —We have had but a very moderate business in cloth since Tuesday , especially in domestic and printing cloth , which are depressed below all other kinds . Sheetings , though better to sell than those . stated , are anything but brisk ; and the market closes heavily for all descriptions , the silk trade is also in a most depressed state , and without any immediate prospect of improvement . Twist'is by no means so brisk as it ought to be at this s ° ason ; prices in no way changed since Tuesday . BitADioim , Wool . —There * Has been more inquiry for wool , and , 011 the whole , more business done . The stock in t -e market of such things as are wanted , is onlv small ,
which arises from the growers seeking prices that cannot be realized here , and the staplers hold , from seeing that they cannot replace their stocks at a profit . Yarns : The firmness in the wool market compels the spinners to seek an advance for Slay delivery , as the rates current only barely pays the cost of the raw mu tennis , which , from the suppl y both in tlie market and into country ' being so small ,, renders nil hope of relief from wool , at a reduced price , very distant . The diminished production , owing to machinery totally idle and others partially employed , is telling favourably towards an amendment , as there are only small stocks , and the spinners working to order , Piece : There is a good deal of business doing in all kinds of goods suitable for the autumn , both by the export houses and the home trade merchants . The fancy trade is still very . depressed , and the stocks on hand very much reduced , as the makers are unwilling to make except to order , which has pressed very heavily on the operatives so engaged , as they have only been partially employed through the winter .
HuDDEHSFiEtD . —There has been a fair amount of business done to-day in fabrics suited to the season , although a due caution is observed on the part . of buyers to select only for their immediate wants . There has been a slight improvement in : the warehouses during the week . , Halifax . —There are rather more favourable symptoms in business this week , the demand having been more animated both for wool and manufactured goods , than for many weeks past . Prices remain stationary . Rochdale Flannel Market . —We have hiid a steady demand'for pieces to-day , but ' the manufacturers complain that the prises are too low to remunerate them for their labour and capital . There is very little change in the wool market either in price or quautitv sold to report , but the prevailing opinion is that ¦ a * better trade would soou cause an advance in the raw material .
JIeckmoxdwike , —We have had two brisk markets this week , and prices are a little tinner . ' Manufacturers complain that they cannot-obtain the raw material at the same price they could a few . weeks ago . Leicester—A few shipping orders are executing for regular hosiery and fancy goods , . but we do not hear of any orders for making , so that the workmen are no better employed . The home trade is a shade better . The cotton season being now approaching' to a close , worsted yarns are . morein demand , and are firm in price . Wools are steady , and combing skins is in good request . _ Glasgow ^—Cotton Yarn : The business doing still continues limited , being confined . to the immediate wants of the manufacturer ? , and prices are without change . —Cotton goods : The market continues much in tho same state as reported last week , but on the whole we think that trade generally is .. improving . —Iron : Prices areas
uudemoted : —Pig iron £ 3 10 s ., oar iron £ 10 , nail reds £ 11 , boiler plates and sheets £ 13 lOs .-per ton . —American produce : Sweet barrel - flour , best Canadian , 32 s . 6 d , nett , sour ditto , 32 s . Cd . per barrel ; 1 st Montreal pots , 23 s . Gd . to 24 s ., 1 st ditto , pearl . 23 s . Gd ., lard , common 47 s . to 48 s ., ditto refined , SUs ., cheese . States , ordinary , 52 s ., ditto best , 50 s ., butter , Canadian , 70 s . to 75 s . per cwt . The flour market is quite firm : the large quantity bonded , which will not be released before July at the earliest and the small stocks of consumers , cause holders to look tor a moderate rise before that time . Sour gets scarce , and brings as good a price as sweet . Ashes are flat , although the stock on hand is not heavy . L : ird and cheese keep moving pretty freely at the above rates , There have been some sales of Canadian butter during the week , at prices rather lower than the quotation , the quantity being lndifteront , -
Nottingham . —The wrought cotton hose branch , which employs the greatest number of hands , nut does not pro . duccthc greatest quantity of stockings , is still in a depressed state , tho extra-fine hose gradually disappearing , the cut-up hose frames , through all the numerous de . partments and variations , are rather brisker than the wrought hose . The cotton glove branch is still very good ; but wo are grieved to state that the silk glove trade has met with a serious cheek .. The drawer and pantaloon , branch is not by any means worse , most of the hands having employment . The silk hose branch , whether plain-knotted or ribbed , is becoming gradually extinct , every year lessening the number of frames employed . The fancy lace trade is reviving a shade . We regret to say that the warp trade has not amended . Leeds . —We are glad to say that the woollen trade of this town and neighbourhood is showing signs of improvement , though not to any very great extent . A good amount of business has been done this week , both at the Cioth Ifnils and the warehouses . The demand for tho liner qualities of cloth is better than it has been f or some time past . Stocks are low and prices firm .
Lancashire . — The trade in cotton mills at Oldham rs a little better than it was a fortnight ago , and the hands generally have full employment . The joiners and carpenters are yet Oil Strike , and are likely to remain so at present . The woollen cloth trade at Saddleworrh is in a mwdcratelv healthv state : wages are rather low , and pr . fits upon manufactured goods were scarcely ever known to be less . Tlie hatting branches at Oldham , Ben . ton , Ashton , Stockport and vicinities , is hetter than it was six weeks ago , and yet the operatives on an average have not more than four or five days' work per week , at less wages than they had at most places two years ago . There is less building going on in the above-named districts this spring than there was last year at this time . The flannel trade in liochdale is slowly improving , but manufacturers make loud complaints of the smnllness of profits , The other trades appear to be only in a moderate state . Calico block printing at Church Parish is better than it was three weeks ago , but operatives are only partially employed . The silk trade in the towns round Manchester is in a precarious state , owing to an expectation that an alteration will take place in the raw material .
