prevented the operations of the Turkish and Egyptian squadrons , arid , while the latter were tranquilly waiting for orders , entered the port of Navarino , and all three began to fire at once upon the Ot toman fleet ; the catastrophe which followed was known to all .
The three Powers having thus declared war , the Porte had a right to retaliate , and pursue a very different course than that which it had followed . In order to gain time , however , " at least till summer , " the Ottoman Government thought it necessary to temporize , and , consequently , " every possible show of moderation was used in the conferences and
conversations which took place . Trusting that the armistice would he observed until an answer should be received , the Porte earnestly entreated the Ambassadors to transmit its friendly declarations and explanations to their respective

"
The Miusulmen are then reminded of the conquests of their ancestors over the Infidels , and assured that , if , like them , Ihey be united , they will , under the auspices of the Most High and their holy legislator , " gain the most brilliant victories . " If the three Powers , seeiug
the determined attitude assumed by Turkey , should persist in their vain demands relative to the Greeks , then , notwithstanding the tradition which says that " all the Infidels compose one nation , " the Mussulmen ought to commit themselves to the protection of God and his propnet , and form but one single bodv .
The object of the Infidels is described to be the destruction of Islainism , and the war a religious and national one ; and the manifesto concludes by calling upon the faithful to make every effort , and submit to every sacrifice , for the preservation of their religion and their country , as the only means of securing their salvation in this world and the next .
