pected to attend a divine revelation , ( Props * xcv . & xcviiX as a sort of begging of the question , and to the idea of uncontrolled
miracles in Def . lxix , in opposition to which , he insisted largely on the importance of Mr . Farmer ' s notion of miracles T -and he introduced a variety of additional remarks on the evidences of
Christianity , particularly those suggested by the objections of Hume and Gibbon ^ The fourth year was devoted to
the long miscellaneous series of subjects , contained in the remain * der of Doddridge ' s course ; consisting of a review of the various schemes which have been formed
of the doctrines of revelation , respecting God , the Son and the Spirit , the fail , and the recovery of man by the mediation of Jes&s , the positive institutions , the Christian sabbath , the doctrine of angels and the future state . It must be confessed that there is a
great apparent fairness in a review of this sort ; and it will be admitted by all who have attended hi » lectures , that Dr . Aikin reported the various schemes of the
numerous authors referred to by Doddridge , or of those who , having published their works since Doddridge ' s death , were introduced by the Dr . himself , with all possible justice and impartiality . It

wits of the wisest and best of men ; or else to induce the opposite extreme of scepticism , on subjects , with regard to which they find such men coming to such different and even opposite conclusions . These several effects the writer
thinks he has observed in different young persons , according to the notions which they had respectively formed of the extent of their own powers . Is it not likely , that a steady and settled , as well as free and unbiassed , system of
opinions , touching the doctrines of revelation , will be formed , with greater advantage , by a careftil , critical examination of the original scriptures ? and when these have once been closely investigated ,
the mind will be prepared to judge , with greater ability as well as fairness , concerning the result of other men ' s researches . The fifth yeaY was employed in the study of Jewish antiquities , ecclesiastical history , the pastoral care , &c .: and the students were
at liberty to refresh their memories with attending any part of the course of the four former years . Their time , besides , was much taken up with engagements to
preach , among the numerous congregations which are scattered over that part of Lancashire and Cheshire ; either for the supply of vacancies , or for the occasional
accommodation of resident ministers . In the preparation of sermons for this purpose , they had every assistance and direction , both sis to method and language , of which they chose to avail themselves , without the slightest interference with sentiments , unless io the way of : friendly suggestion ; but never of authoritative interference .
