sir , Jlyril 20 , 1808 . The high esteem and veneration I entertain for Mr . Belsham on ticeount of his theological knowledge , his superior talents , his -critical skill and intrepid -boldness in the defence of what he
conceives to be truth , would incline me , were I not a stranger , which I ever wish to be , to implicit faith , to submit with little hesitation to liis decisions ; but as I ajn taught
to call no man master upon earth , to follow the convictions of my own mind , and to dissent from every man where I think his arguments weak and inconclusive , y « u
will not wonder if I attempt to point out what appears to me erroneous in a writer of whom I have a very high opinion and for whom I feel the most sincere
respect . When I first read Mr . B . ' s observations on the pre-existence of Jesus Christ in his two last letters to Mr . Carpenter , I felt that impression which his , mode of -reasoning is calculated to produce ; this led me to read them with
