No . I . His declaration at his ordination . EVERY one was born for nobler ends than to go to and fro in the earth , and walk up and down in it , and is obliged to do and get r * much good in the world as he is able . And as
circumstances now are , I do not know anyother way , wherein i may be more capable of being as serviceable to God , as useful to others , and as profitable to myself ; I am therefore willing , if I may
he judged worthy , to devote myself to this awful work ; that I may be in a better capacity of working out my own salvation , and be made an instrument in the hand of God for promoting the salvation of others .
< c Who is sufficient for these things ?" But I trust the grace of God will be HiifHcient for me . Therefore I promise in his strength and assistance to be diligent , faithful and constant , in the discharee of the several duties of this
important trust . I hope , that God will ever give me . such a value for the truth , as to search after it impartially and to conform to it universally , as far as I know it . But
insiderinor how liable 1 am to error myself , and how apt frail man is to call error truth and truth errbr ; 1 hope God will ever enable me to regulate and temper my zeal with humility , knowled ge , moderation and charity .

Some of my brethren tell me , that they also have a ri ght to insist upon certain conditions , which our lord . and master has no where specified . In this case , I will say "with St . Paul , " I will be brought under the power of no man ; " nor bow my knee to any . but to
him , to whom " every knee must bow . ' * For this cause my brethren have shut mf out . Therefore I am obliged to seek my ordination from those , who profess to do it upon gospel terms . In whatever relation it shall please God to p lace me , I hope to act as one that is sensible , that a faithful discharge of all relative duties is essential to Christianity , and that it is in vain to pretend to religion without it .
If at any time I should go astray , or if any of my brethren should but suspect that t do , —if they will be pleased not to publish their suspicions to the world , but bring them directly to me , with ttieir reason for them , I hope God will give me grace to reform upon the first conviction . But if they should be mistaken , and I should see no reason to condemn myself , 1 should nevertheless , return them my Christian thanks for their godly jeslousy , and act afterwards , as I see reason . I feel methinks , a passionate inclination to cry out with Peter , " Though all men should forsake thee , yet would not I . " But T remember Pcrer fell- J
