doctrine of atonement is the chief corner stoiie , the gospel itf the glad tidings of a mysterious charm or amvrfet ^ &c , &C , * ' * Having now carefully weighed the charges of your correspondent , and his arguments in support of them , I have no hesitation to repeat that , by the death of Mr . Evanson , I believe the Christian world has lost one of its " brightest prnatnentS /* one of its u best instructors . "
I would seriously recommend to your correspondent to read the writings of Mr . Evanson with a little more candour and attention before he makes any fresh remarks upon them ; but should he think fit to bring forward any more charges against Mr . E . or myself , so much do I dislike all disputation of this

DEFENCE OF MR . ROSCOE AGAINST THE EVANGELICAt , '" MAGAZINE . " To the Editor of the Monthly Repository . ^ Sir , Much has lately been said concerning the comparative in oral tendency of the Unitarian and the Calvinistic creeds , and the
zealous disciples of the Geneva reformer have made loud boasts of triumph on this head . Undoubtedly it must be granted , that if a certain kind of zeal in the spread of particular favourite notions in religion—if very numerous and very long prayersif odd gesticulations in prayer and preaching—if an affectation of the phraseology of holy scripture—and , above all , if a most
determined animosity against all those who may presume to differ from them in points of faith , may be said to constitute the substance of Christian morality , then the Calvinists have the advantage of the Unitarians in a very eminent degree ^ and
have abundant cause to say to their Unitarian neighbours—*•* Stand by yourselves ; we are holier than ye : " but if one might venture to insist upon the duties of charity and goodwill as making a very conspicuous figure in the system of Christian morality , I am afraid the comparison between these two sects would not be found to operate very favourably upon * Postscript to Letter to Priestley ' s Young Man , p . 117 .
