    ARTICLE I . Discourses chiefly on Devotional Subjects * by the late Rev * Newcome Cappe ; to which are prefixed , Memoirs of his Life ^ by Catharine Cappe , Svo . 9 s . Johnson and Mawmari *

    r jr ^ HIS volume is edited by , what may well be denominated , JL the conjugal piety of a worthy and amiable widow ; to it

    is prefixed a second edition of the author ' s memoirs ^ formerly added to some critical dissertations published soon after his death . Among the , additions made to these , none are more interesting than what respects the reception which they obtained from a fellow-student , in whom they revived not only the pleasing remembrance of the time spent at the academy with

    his friend Cappe , in the joint pursuit of wisdom , virtue , and religion , but the joyful hope , the btessed assurance which usually terminated their social intercourse , that they would meet again in another and better world . Whether this friend

    was Moore , Mrs . Cappe has reft the reader to conjecture ; but the following lines on contentment , written by that excellent poet , she deems so descriptive of her husband ' s character and dispositions , that she could have fancied them written by himself :

    Divine Contentment still be nigh , To cheer me with thy placid eye ., While through this fleeting life ' s short various day , An humble pilgrim here I plod my way . May no ambitious dreams delude my mind - Impatience hence be far , and far be pride . Whate ' er my lot on Heav ' n ' s kind care reclin ed , Be piety my comfort—faith my gukle . Since in this volume are published some sermons , from which , in the first edkion of the memoirs , were made very copious extracts ; these extracts are now of course oroitted . To the

    present publication however are added Mr . Wood ' s elegant and manly tribute to Mr . Capped memory , with Mr . Welbeloved ' s intereresting and pathetic account of Dr . Robert Cappe , annexed to an animated and sensible discourse on that melanchol y occasion . Whilst no well-disposed mind can hel p regretting
