generate , whose shade darkens hope and withers charity ; and they turn the attention of man , inquiring after salvation , from works of goodness to professions of faith . To mitigate , though we cannot hope to destroy these evils ; to lead men to the knowledge of God , as their Father , and
not as their Tyrant , and to that worship of Him alone which he requires and Christ practised ; to inspire love to Him , by shewing- that he is himself love , and infinitely worthy of the affection of his creatures ; to proclaim that glorious truth , the pillar of charity and goodness , that whosoever feareth God and worketh righteousness is accepted of Him ;—these are our objects ; and on their prudent but zealous pursuit we implore , and hope to receive , the blessing of Almighty God .
