' ' ' * -I ' ' In resigning their trust , and rendering an account of their stewardship , your Committee hbp ^ ttilatr the statement , now to belaid before you , of the transactions of the past year , will shew that they have endeavoured to manage the resources of the Society , and to promote its objects , with fidelity , zeal and prudence ; and you will participate in the pleasure with
which they announce that , from the various means of information which they have possessed , it decidedly applars to them that the cause of Unitarianism is gradually and generally advancing . The increase of its avowed supporters is considerable ; amongst those who have long been known to be its friends there is more zeal and co-operation ; and a spirit of inquiry and liberality is rapidly spreading amongst Christians of other denominations .
While the objects for which the Unitarian Fund was instituted are most important and interesting , and the experience of thirteen years has furnished testimony to the efficacy of the means employed for their accomp lishment , it is gratifying to reflect that very considerable good has incidentally been produced by its existence . Of this description was the
Bill for the repeal of the penal statutes against Antitrinitarians , so judiciously carried through the Legislature by Mr , W . Smith , and which originated in your Committee . Another instance occurred during the past year . The prosecution commenced , but abandoned , against Mr . John Wpght , for blasphemy ; the Wolverhampton Case , still pending in the Court erf Chancery , and by the decision on which the property held by many of our Congregations may be materially affected ; the doctrines advanced in both these cases as to the liability of Unitarians to indictment at Common Law ; the desirableness of applying to the
Legislature for soine modification of a Marriage Service which enjoins the forms of Trinitarian worship , with the difficulty of obtaining sufficient co-operation for that purpose , -and of ascertaining the best method to be pursued ; these and othen circumstances had impressed several gentlemen with the * necessity of a permanent ? bod ^ to watch ove r the operation , of the * law #
