      Dec . 27 , 1 . 80 $ . . That the phraseology of the New Testament is , in many instances , borrowed from that which is made use of in the Jewish Scriptures , cannot be doubted by those who have been in the habit

      of comparing the one with the other . The writers of the New Testament were Jews , who were well acquainted with the writings of Moses and the prophets , and who make perpetual references to

      them . Our Lord also was a Jew ^ and his ministry was chiefly exercised amongst those of his own nation ; it is therefore to be

      supposed that his language , his allusions , and metaphors , would be such as they were well acquainted with , and derived from their own Scriptures .

      This remark applies , in a striking manner , to all those passages in which our Lord speaks of the future punishment of the wicked ,

      and may serve to illustrate that remarkable expression of our Lord , Mat . xxv . 41 . u Everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels . " ¦ ¦ '

      in reference to the future punishment of men . The latter ( which occurs twelve times in the New Testament ) is applied uniformly to that subject . That the punishment of gehenna is utter

      destruction , appears from our Lord ' s words , Mat . x . 48 . " Fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in gehenna . 99 That it is meant to express the highest degree of punishment is clear

      from chap . v . 22 . u But whosoever shall say , Thou fool , shall be in danger of the Jire of gekenna . " In chap , xxiii . 33 . we read of the cc damnation of gem henna / 9 In Mark ix . 43—48 .

      gehenna occurs three times , and the Jire of it is as . often said to be unquenchable . " Where their worm dieth not , and their fire is not quenched / ' These words are literally taken from Isa . lxvi . 24 * .

      " And they shall go forth and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me ; for their worm shall not die , neither shall their fire be quenched ^ and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh . " To the same passage does
