April Iff , 1810 / si % I beg leave tor request the insertion of a few observations on your correspondent , N / s remarks ( p . 116 . ) upon a letter of mine , which appeared in your last volume , [ Vol . iv- p- 200 . ] In the first place , I wilt assure him , that , humble as my . station in life is , I really know u the difference between translating the Scriptures and expounding or paraphrasing them " As to the addition of

Scripture , yer , when some of the most able persons among them had it in their power to give what ( according to their own avowed opinions ) they must think more exact renderings of the original , they have , in so many material instances , either retained the old
versiqn , or given us another little , veijy little , differing from it ; by which we are still misled , and they tl ^ mselves have built up the faith they have so often endeavoured to destroy . admit that the Word ( meaning Jesus Christ ) was a . god , or that the fulness of the Deity dwelleth in him ? If their own opinion be true , must not such translations ( so likely to mislead the greater part of readers ) be indefensible ? If these translations ( in the sense
in which they will generally be understood ) be just , must not their opinions be unscrjptural ? With what consistency , too , is the declaration , ( Matth . xxv . 46 )
that some shall go away into everlasting punishment , retained by persons who , in tfaeir note on the passage , allow , that the word
translated ^ ' punisbment" properly signifies " correction for the benefit of the offender , " and that the word translated U everlasting ^ is often used to " express a long but indefinite duration' * ? If (
