in sober prose , What has it done ? what is it doing ? what is it likely to do for musical art in this country ? A mouldy old house in a forgotten street , resembling nothing so much as an asylum for decayed undertakers , alone gives it a local habitation and a name . Let us hope that the ample and generous pro- , ceeds of the concert a . t St . James ' s Hall will make the-Royal . Academy of Music something more real than the Mrs . Harris of British musical circles . On the same day a remarkable concert , for the benefit of tlie Warwick Catholic Schools , was given at the Hanoveb-sqcake ltooMs , and vas attended by all the elite of the Catholic aristocracy . On Thursday afternoon Mr . Charles Halxk gave the second of his Classical Chamber Concerts at Willis ' s Rooms , before a select company of admirers of the choicest art ; while Madame Bassano and Herr Kdhe were in possession of the Haitover-sqitarb lioosis ,
| and rejoicing in the presence of a distinguished and delighted assemblage . On Friday Madame Szarvady ' s third and last Matine ' e filled Willis ' s Rooms with beauty , and the fair and fascinating pianiste played , as no one else can play , those wild and wayward compositions of Chopin and Stephen Heller , which have something so shattered and so piercing in their melancholy grace that only the most finely and delicately organized musical natures can interpret them . The exquisite movbidezza of Madame Szarvady ' s touch makes such music all her own . This afternoon , the first of English pianists ( not easily excelled by any living pianist ) , Miss Arabella Goddard , gives her Matine ' e Musicale at Willis ' s Rooms , and we doubt hot she will receive a welcome due to the young lady who , in the bloom of her years , has achieved a reputation in musical Europe which England has a right to cherish as a national honour .

London , Friday Evening , Juno 25 . The amount of business that tako * place now in the Stock Exchange is really nominal . Consols being shut there are few bargains even amongst speculators . Tho Government broker makes small purchases daily in Reduced and Now Three per Cont ., but tlio market is languishing from want of business . Foreign stooks are somewhat lower . Turkish Six per Cents , at about 05 . The trade of the country roinnins ho inactive that eno cannot , expect to boo an improvement in stocks or shares . The traillo returns or thn
several Hues exhibit moat discouraging decreases , all show weakness , and the rumours of decreased dividends make tlio hearts of shareholders sink within them . The groat fall of the week , howevor , has been in the once favourite stock Caledonian now quoted at 74 , in six months a fall of nearly 20 per cont . There the decrease- in tralllo goes on steadily at about 100 ? , per weok , varied by this week ' s decrease , being 1200 J . The sales from the north have been continuous and heavy , Perhaps the now system now adopting by Glasgow banks of being more particular in their advances on railway property is forcing stock into the market .
In the heavy share market . Groat Westerns have boon at 4 . 31 , but have recovored 1 per cent . Midlands show the best trallio ; oven thoynt 01 are dear enough . Indian guaranteed shares are very little in de mand , and all hough 1 ' ronch and foreign railway sharon nro slightly firmer , there is no amount of business doing likely to force thorn nmcli higher . Canadian shares rule Mat , and this may bo said of
all American securities . Illinois Central , once at 30 premium , are now at 24 discount . ] Ne \ v York and Erie shares have receded , to 15-17 , a fall of 80 per cent , since the winter . There has been , some demand in Land shares , Canada and Australian , this week . Joint-Stock Sank shares are better thought of . Mining and miscellaneous shares remain with no great or marked feature .

Thk Boabd of Tbadk Returns for the past month were issued on Thursday morning , and again show a heavy falling off in the declared value of our exportations , the difference as compared with the corresponding month of the past year , being 1 , 117 , 556 / . The heaviest redaction has been in woollen goods and metals , especially iron , chiefly from , the stagnation of the American and colonial trade . Cottons have been rather largely taken , owing to the better character of the Eastern demand ; but the large majority of articles are on the unfavourable side , and the return indicates that the opinions occasionally expressed that some general revival of
activity was taking place was unfounded . The total of oar exports for the first five months of the year has been 43 , 226 , 37 U , showing a decrease of 6 , 969 , 170 * ., or nearly fifteen , per cent- As compared with the corresponding five months of 1856 , the reduction has been only 80 , 958 / . With regard to imported commodities , a large increase in the arrivals of wheat , flour , and other grain , is the chief feature . The supplies of tea have been considerable , and there has also been an increase in the quantity taken into use . The consumption of cocoa , tobacco , fruits ,, and spices , likewise shows an augmentation , while in that of coffee , sugar , wines , and spirits , there has again been a falling dfT . —Times .
Thk Papeb Duty . —A meeting to advocate the repeal of the paper duty took place on Thursday ; Mr . Milner Gibson , M . P ., in . the chair . Several resolutions were carried , including one for opening a subscription to aid in the agitation of the subject . Mr . Bailue , the present Solicitor-General for Scotland , will succeed Mr . Inglia as Lord-Advocate , 4 nd doubtless as M . P . for Stamford .
