after his retiring address was isBiied , it was unanimously resolved that a requisition should be sent to Sir William Dunbar , of Mockruca , inviting him to become a candidate . It is understood . that . Sir William ( who is a Liberal ) will receive the powerful support of Lord Stair . Tho retiring member is a Liberal , and voted with , the minority on the China question . Mr . Craufurd , the present member for the Ayr burghs —a Liberal , and supporter of Ministers during the recent crisis—ia to be confronted at ' the coming election by an old rival , Mr . A . T . Uoyle , advocate , who has started in tho Conservative interest .
Mr . Cowan has issued an address to the electors of Edinburgh indignantly protesting against the attempt that has been made by tlie Independent Liberal Committee to coerce him to retire in favour of others holding the same opinions , and submitting bis claims to the decison of the electors . Mr . Oliphant ( Liberal ) addressed a crowded meeting of electors at Dumferline on Monday evening , and a resolution was passed declaring him " a fit and proper person" to raprcaont the burghs .
On tho retirement of Mr . Duncan , who lias represented Dnndoe for about sixteen yearo , two candidates offered themselves—Mr . P . IL Thorns and Sir John Ogilvie of Baldovan , both on Liberal principles . Mr . Thorns has since retired in favour of Sir John , considering that one point of difference between them ( Mr . Thoma being opposed to tho Maynooth grant ) did not justify him entering oa a contest . Sir John Ogilvio is therefore likely to bo returned , though some Kadical opposition was threatened .

James Perry , are also mentioned . For Dublin University , tbe only candidate at present is a gentleman named Wilson , an ultra-Conservative . Mr . W . E . Lendrick , a moderate Conservative , means to oppose the return of Mr . Kirk for the Ne-wry Boroughs ; but it is thought he has but a poor chance . For New Itoss , the candidates are—Mr . S . ' -H . Graves ( chairman of the Shipowner ' s Association of Liverpool ) Mr . Tottenham ( the sitting member ) , and Sir Thomns Redington .
Letters from Tralee state that Mr . Chute has declined the Conservative invitation to stand for the borough . Lieutenant-Colonel De Moleyns has also refused . Tlve Conservatives , therefore , have no candidate . Mr . Butt will have to struggle for his seat for YoughaU Hi 3 opponent will "be Mr . . MEETINGS . The adjourned niectiug of the General and Parliamentary Committees of tlie Liberal Registration Association was held at the London Tavern , Bishopsgatestreet , on Tuesday afternoon , for the purpose of considering tho claims of tlie various candidates for the representation of the Gity . Mr . J . Ingram Traver 3 occupied the chair , and the majority of those who attended the previous meeting were again present . After some preliminaries , Sir James Duke explained why ho had not voted for Mr . Dodson , the Liberal candidate for East Sussex—a subject which had beeu brought forward at tlie previous meeting ' , ns a reason ¦ wh y he should not be supported in his own canvass for
London . He now stated that he could not giro his countenance to the return of Mr . Dodson beeauso that gentleman was anxious to get into Parliament as a supporter of Lord PalmcratoJi ' s Government without giving any definite explanation of his political principles ; but tl ^ ero were two points uj ) on which he entirely differed with Mr . Dodson . That gentleman was opposed to vote by ballot , and a supporter of tho Maynooth grant . N " ow he ( Sir James Duke ) bad boon many years in Parliament , and , while ho had always set his face against state grants to any church , he had always voted for thu ballot , aud stood tip for tho cause of civil and religious liberty . But he did not standalone in the matter . For the same reasons that lie liad felt himself , Mr . Cobden and other Liberal olectors of Kast Sussex refused to support Mr . Dodson . —Mr . Raikes Currio , Baron Lionel < le Rothschild , and Mr . Crawford , the three other candidates , having
addressed the meeting in el ucklntion of their principles , Mr . Morloy said he was not going to vote against Sir James Duko in consequence of the Kast Suffolk election , nor for Lord John Russell , without stating his reasons .
