During the last three years , upwards of 1200 ucw assurances have been effected , yielding ; an increase of premium income of more than 20 , 000 ? . per annurn ; and although a general high rate of mortality has prevailed among Assured lives during the last two years , it has riot been deemed necessary to reduce , in the > slightest degree , tho allowances previously awarded to the Policy-holders . The Members present at tho Meeting' were fully satisfied ¦ with tho Report , arid . resolved unanimously that it reduction of 31 | per cent , should be made in this current year ' s Premium payable by all Policy-holders now entitled to participate in the Profits . ¦ ..-. ¦ Credit is allowed for half the Annual Premiums for tho first five years . The Progress and Improvement of tiie British fisheries is a , national obieet , in which all classes of the community aro interested . The wealth and energies of tho XJnited Kingdo in are , in other channels , rapidly developing our great industrial resources ; but our Fisheries remain in . the sarao state in which they were two centuries ago . Our increasing population requires that every means that art and scienco can devise should . be adopted , in order to procure the necessaries of life as abundantly arid cheaply as possible ; but , though it is well knowu that the Seas vrhich surround the British Isles , teem with abundance of Bish , yet the supply of that article of food is always uncertain , aud its price , generally high , is often exorbitant . . The British Pisheries , if conducted on a proper system , and on a scale of sufficient magnitude , aro capable of yielding an abundant supply of ¦ wholesoino food . There is no branch of our National Iudustry to wliich Steam . Power can be . more advantageously and profitably applied . Fishiue . Banks as yet untouched , because they could not bo reached by the present Sailing Craft employed in tho trade , may , by means of Steam Power , bo made available for a vast ] v increased and more regular supply of Fish . Hitherto our Fisheries have been prosecuted only by the Coast Fishermen in Sailing Vessels at particular seasons ; and tho priuoipal part ot tho Fish caught has been cured for export , or sent to London , where tho demand may bo said to be almost unlimited . By the adoption of Steam Power , tho regular and daily supply of this article of food i « tho freshest state , would bo extended to the principal ports of the United Kingdom , to bo thence conveyed by rail to tho citios and towns of tUo interior . It is admitted by the trade that tho quantity of Fish is not half of that which wight be sold , provided tho supply wero regular . It is , therefore , proposed to establish the BuiTisii Steam Fisiieiues Company , for tho purposo of combining capital with skill , and by means of Welled Steam Vessels , to develop , in a manner tlxat has novcr been attempted before , the inexhaustible resources of tlio Sea , and to convey tho Fish caught or purcliasod , witli Bpeed and regularity to tho best markets . As a commercial enterprizo , tUis Compayiy prosonts undoubtod advantages ; and while it will give constant employment to a great many scamon and boys , in addition . to those already engaged in the trade , it is calculated that it will , after defraying ovory cxponue , seouro to the Shareholders a roturn of from 20 to 2 Q por Cent , on tlio capital expended . Tho Diroctors proposo to commence with a capital of 100 , 000 ? ., in Shares of 10 Z . each ( with powbr to increase ) , and . to placo Steamera at different ports on the Coasts of England and Scotland , nearest to the Fishing Banks in tho North Sea , and afterwards to extend tho operations of the Company to Foreign Fisheries , as tho succoss of tho undertaking may justify . All Sales of Fish being for Cash , a Dividend can he paid Quarterly . Applicntions for Shares to bo mado in tho annexed form , addressed to tho Diroctors of tho Ui'itlsh Steam Fisheries Company , Limited , at thoir OIUcoh , County Chambors , 11-, Cornhil ) , London ; or to the Brokers of tho Company , "VValtek G-.
