The Nineteenth Century Serials Edition (ncse) was the result of an AHRC-funded collaboration between Birkbeck College, King's College London, Olive Software, and the British Library that ran from 2005 to the project launch in 2008. In 2017, concerned about vulnerabilities in the software, the Facsimiles component was taken offline. Shortly afterwards, work began at King's Digital Lab on a replacement viewer, launched in October 2018 (see Technical Overview of the 2018 edition).
The work was funded by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at King's College London and the School of Arts at Birkbeck College. Three of the original editors of ncse worked with colleagues from the King's Digital Lab to design and build the new resource. Doctoral student interns worked with Birkbeck's Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies to provide the revised bibliography and accompanying essays. Ana Parejo Vadillo, from the Department of English and Humanities at Birkbeck College, recruited and managed the student interns, liaising between the College and the project.
